Mahwah, NJ: The United States Merchant Marine Academy earned a non-conference road win over Ramapo College this afternoon, 23-12. Merchant Marine moves to 11-2 overall while the Roadrunners now stand at 4-10 on the year.
USMMA took a quick 2-0 lead with back-to-back goals from Julia Coughlin in the first quarter before
Kelly Griffin got Ramapo on the board with the team's first goal. USMMA then scored three straight for a 5-1 lead before
Colleen Mason scored back-to-back goals, including the final goal of the first with 39 seconds remaining. USMMA led 5-3 heading into the second quarter.
USMMA put in nine goals in the second to Ramapo's two as Mason collected both goals for Ramapo. Mason's first goal in the second came off a pass from
Emma Cowap, which was Mason's 100th career point. Also in the second quarter, Ramapo goalkeeper
Alyssa Curto collected her 200th career save in the net on her fourth save of the game. Curto is just the fourth Roadrunner in program history to reach this milestone. In the third, Ramapo added six goals to their tally. Griffin started the scoring for Ramapo off a pass from
Kaylie Gresek, Mason added three more goals and
Erin Smeilus tallied one as well. USMMA added five as they led 19-11 heading into the fourth where they posted four goals to Ramapo's one, Griffin took a pass from
Esme Espinosa late in the quarter for the team's 12 goal of the game.
Mason scored eight goals while Griffin posted three goals and two assists. Gresek led the way with four assists while Espinosa added two assists. Curto wrapped up the game with 13 saves which ties a career high.
The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday, April 29th when they host TCNJ in NJAC action at 1pm. The two teams are joining forces to host Ramapo's first Morgan's Message Dedication game. Morgan's Message was created to end the stigma surrounding mental health and student-athletes, to provide resources and to honor the life of Morgan Rodgers, a former Duke Women's Lacrosse player. The Roadrunners and Lions will be wearing teal butterflies, the logo of Morgan's Message, on their lacrosse sticks along with teal wristbands and pre-game t-shirts.
