Mahwah, NJ: The Rutgers-Newark University baseball team defeated Ramapo College this afternoon in NJAC action, 4-2. The Scarlet Raiders move to 20-11-1 overall and 4-7-1 in the NJAC while the Roadrunners now stand at 18-13 overall and 5-7 in the conference.
Rutgers-Newark scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning on a bases loaded single down the right field line from Paul Reechia which plated all three runs. They added one more in the top of the fifth as Eric Reechia singled home Jon Rosado with a single down the left field line for a 4-0 lead.
Ramapo chipped back late in the game in the sixth and eighth innings as
Justin Garthaffner plated both runs with RBI sac flies. In the sixth,
Brian Baranok scored and in the eighth
Matt Lalomia scored to cut the Rutgers-Newark lead in half, 4-2. Ramapo would bring the game-winning run to the plate in the ninth with two outs before the Scarlet Raiders got out of the jam.
Vince Taylor (6-1) struck out six, walked one and scattered six hits and let up one run over seven complete innings of work. Connor Baksh worked the eighth with one strikeout, one walk while he surrendered one run and one hit. Robert Gonzalez earned the save with one strikeout, one walk and one hit in the ninth.
Jack Martin (2-3) struck out a season high 11 on the mound for Ramapo in a tough loss. Martin walked three, let up seven hits and four runs in eight innings of work.
Troy Karaty worked the ninth in relief as he faced the minimum three batters.
Ramapo returns to action tomorrow morning when they host New Jersey City University in a pair of NJAC games beginning at 10:30am.
