Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College softball team earned a doubleheader sweep over Rutgers-Newark University in two run-rule shortened games, 12-0 in game one and 11-2 in game two. The Roadrunners improve to 26-7-1 overall and 10-1-1 in the NJAC. The Scarlet Raiders move to 7-21 overall and 1-11 in the conference.
Game 1
Kori Gargiulo got Ramapo on the board in the bottom of the first inning when she hit a line drive single to center field plating
Alexis Corra.
Hannah Hensler plated two RBI with a hard hit single up the middle for a 3-0 lead. The team scored six runs in the second inning for a 9-0 lead. The inning was highlighted by a two-RBI double from
Mahogany Wheeler before
Avery Bartolomeo doubled to left field to drive in Wheeler. In the fourth inning, Corra drove in
Lia Milsom before Wheeler posted a sac fly to center field to plate Rygiel, 11-0. Bartolomeo then drove in Corra with a single to left field, 12-0.
Kassy Stefanski (9-2) struck out six, walked two and let up just one hit in four innings of work.
Sara Cappetti worked 2/3 of the fifth as she struck out one and did not walk a batter while surrendering two hits.
Brooke Knight came in for relief and needed one pitch to close out the game as she induced a comebacker in the circle for the final out of the inning. Ramapo pounded out 18 hits in the game as Bartolomeo finished 4-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Rygield and Corra each finished 3-4 while Wheeler, Gargiulo and Hensler each collected two hits.
Game Two
In the top of the third, Rutgers-Newark scored an unearned run on an infield error by the Roadrunners for a 1-0 lead. In the bottom half of the inning Ramapo came back with eight runs. Rygiel led off her 100th hit of her career, a solo homerun over the left field fence to tie the game, 1-1. Corra then singled before Wheeler hit a two-run home run to give Ramapo the lead for good, 3-1. Hensler drove in Bartolomeo with an RBI sac fly before Messina drove in
Avery Kontura with a single to right field, 5-1. The throw-in from the outfield was misplayed allowing Gargiulo to score before Messina later scored on a wild pitch, 7-1. Wheeler plated the eighth run of the game on an RBI double as Rygiel scored, 8-1. The Scarlet Raiders plated one run in the fourth before Wheeler ended the game with a three-run homerun in the bottom of the fifth, 11-2.
Rygiel and Wheeler each posted three hits in the game while Wheeler collected a team high six RBI. Corra finished 20=-4 with two runs scored. Wheeler (8-3) struck out one, walked one and let up five hits in five innings of work in the circle for the Roadrunners.
Ramapo returns to action on Saturday, April 22nd when they travel to NJCU for a pair of NJAC games at 1pm.
