Bronx, NY: The Ramapo College softball team earned a non-conference sweep over John Jay College (0-2) this afternoon on the road. The Roadrunners (2-0) won game one, 7-3, while they posted a shutout in the night cap, 9-0.
Game 1
The Roadrunners scored one run in the top of the first as
Alexis Corra was hit by a pitch and later scored on a wild pitch, 1-0. John Jay took a 3-1 lead heading into the top of the second before Ramapo added three runs to take a 4-3 lead.
Avery Kontura drove home
Nicole Cerasi with an RBI single before
Katie Rygiel laced a double to right-center field to plate two runs in
Jaclyn Monaco and Kontura. In the sixth, Ramapo added one run on a John Jay error as Rygiel was able to score before Monaco drove home two RBI in the top of the seventh with a hard hit single back up the middle, 7-3.
Monaco led the Roadrunners at the plate in game one, finishing 3-4 with two runs scored and two RBI while Rygiel also collected two hits and two RBI.
Mahogany Wheeler (1-0) opened the season with a complete game as she struck out six, walked four and scattered five hits.
Game 2
Ramapo took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Corra doubled home Kontura who reached on a walk earlier in the inning. In the fourth, Kontura laced a bases clearing triple to the left-center field gap as
Avery Bartolomeo,
Hannah Hensler and
Anna Messina all scored for a four run lead. In the top of the fifth, Messina drove home Corra as she slapped a single to left field before Monaco scored in the sixth on an RBI sac fly from Kontura, 6-0. In the top of the seventh, Messina plated two RBI with a triple to right field before
Kori Gargiulo singled home Messina with a single to left field as Ramapo took a 9-0 lead.
Kassy Stefanski fired a two hitter through six innings of work for the Roadrunners with eight strikeouts and no walks while
Brooke Knight came into the game for the seventh inning in relief. Knight faced four batters and struck out three.
Kontura led the team with four RBI while Messina was 3-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Hensler finished 2-2 with two runs scored and two walks while Corra and Bartolomeo each collected two hits.
The Roadrunners return to action at THE Spring Games on Saturday, March 11th when they take on Nebraska Wesleyan University at 2pm and #20 ranked Babson College at 4:30pm.
