RAMAPO SOFTBALL DEFEATS #20 BABSON, SPLITS ON DAY ONE OF THE SPRING GAMES

Winter Haven, FL:  The Ramapo College softball team split a pair of games today to open the Spring Games. The Roadrunners fell to Nebraska Wesleyan University 7-5 before they defeated #20 ranked Babson College 6-3 in game two.
 
Game 1
Ramapo opened the first game with three runs in the first inning before Nebraska Wesleyan took the lead in the second with five runs, 5-3. Katie Rygiel, Mahogany Wheeler and Avery Bartolomeo each drove home an RBI in the first inning for the 3-0 lead. The Prairie Wolves added two runs in the third to extend their lead, 7-3. Ramapo would come back in the seventh with two runs as Anna Messina drove home Wheeler with an RBI single before Jaclyn Monaco laced a single to center field allowing Messina to score to come within two, 5-7. With runners on second and third and two outs, Elise Warneke would earn the save in relief as she shut the door on the Roadrunner office with a strikeout to end the threat.
 
Ramapo collected 16 hits in the game but left 11 runners stranded while Nebraska Wesleyan tallied nine hits and left eight stranded. Avery Kontura, Alexis Corra, Wheeler, Bartolomeo, Messina, Cerasi and Monaco all collected two hits each in the game.
 
Wheeler (1-1) took the loss in the circle as she surrendered seven hits and let up six runs in 2.0 innings of work. Sara Cappetti worked 2/3 of an inning surrendering one hit and one run while Brooke Knight worked the final 3.1 innings with three strikeouts, two walks while she only let up one hit and no runs scored.
 
Game 2
Kassy Stefanski (2-0) fired a four-hitter with five strikeouts in a complete game win over #20 Babson College. Babson took a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning before the Roadrunners scored three runs in the second. Rygiel laced a single up the middle to plate two runs to tie the game at two before Kontura later scored on a fielder's choice from Corra for the 3-2 lead. In the third, Babson's Kate Karramouzis belted a solo home run to tie the game at three before Ramapo took a three-run lead in the fifth. Kori Gargiulo reached on a fielder's choice before Cerasi and Monaco each beat out bunt singles to load the bases with one out. Kontura drew a walk which forced home Gargiulo for the go ahead run before Rygiel drove home Cerasi and Monaco with a hard hit single up the middle, 6-3.
 
Stefanski and the Ramapo defense were able to hold Babson in their final two at-bats to secure the 6-3 victory. Rygiel led the way finishing 3-4 at the plate with three RBI. Monaco and Corra each collected two hits for the Roadrunners.
 
Ramapo will return to action tomorrow morning as they take on #11 ranked Case Western Reserve University at 9am and Salve Regina at 11:30am.
