SOFTBALL SWEEPS WILLIAM PATERSON

Wayne, NJ:  The Ramapo College softball team swept a pair of NJAC games today on the road at William Paterson University. Ramapo posted a score of 4-3 in game one and a run-rule six inning, 9-0 win in game two. The Roadrunners improve to 11-4 overall and 3-1 in the NJAC while the Pioneers now stand at 9-10 overall and 0-4 in the conference.

Game One
The Roadrunners held off a WPU comeback in the bottom of the seventh hold onto the 4-3 win. Ramapo posted four runs in the first inning. With the bases loaded, Katie Rygiel drove home one run with a single to right field before two more runs came home on a WPU error. Avery Bartolomeo then drove home Rygiel with a big double to left field for the 4-0 lead.

Kaitlyn Monahan drove home WPU's first two runs in the fourth and sixth inning to come within two, 2-4. In the seventh inning, Anna Nunziato ripped a double to the center field wall which allowed one run to score, 3-4, before Ramapo executed a perfect relay to home plate as Alexis Corra applied the tag for the second out of the inning. Roadrunner starting pitcher Mahogany Wheeler induced a groundout to end the WPU threat and preserve the road victory.

Wheeler (5-3) worked a complete game with one strikeout while she scattered nine hits. Rygiel and Corra each led the way with two hits apiece as the Roadrunners collected eight in the game.

Game Two
Ramapo continued to score early with two runs in the first inning. Wheeler drove home Krista Verrino with a fielder's choice before Corra scored on Bartolomeo's RBI groundout, 2-0. In the second inning, Carli Egan laced a single up the middle that allowed Verrino to come around and score for the 3-0 lead. The Roadrunners added three more runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.

In the fifth, Verrino and Egan each reached on a single before moving up one base on an infield error. Corra recorded an RBI single plating Verrino before being lifted for pinch runner Melody Gleason. Egan and Gleason later scored on an infield throwing error by WPU for the 6-0 lead. With one out in the sixth, Monaco and Verrino each singled to put runners on first and second. Monaco then stole third base and was able to score when the throw sailed into left field, which allowed Verrino to move to second base. Verrino later scored on a WPU error before Wheeler drove home Corra with an RBI double to push the score, 9-0.  Ramapo held the Pioneers in the bottom half of the inning to force the run-rule victory.

Marissa DiPaolo (5-1) earned the win in the circle as she struck out a season high eight, allowed no walks and let up just one hit, a leadoff single in the first inning. Verrino and Egan led the way with three hits each in the game.

Ramapo returns to action on Thursday, April 7th when they host John Jay College at 3pm.
