Jersey City, NJ: The New Jersey City University men's basketball team defeated Ramapo College, 58-49, in NJAC conference action. The Gothic Knights move to 5-3 overall and 2-2 in the NJAC while the Roadrunners now stand at 4-4 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
In the first half, NJCU opened up a 6-2 lead before
Shane Rooney and
Peter Gorman made back-to-back baskets for the Roadrunners to tie the game, 6-6. A pair of free throws and a made basket put NJCU up 10-6 with 15 minutes left in the half. The two teams traded baskets over the next two minutes before a three-pointer from Zaire Jefferson gave NJCU a 17-12 lead with 10:39 to go. That started a 5-2 run before Rooney scored a basket for Ramapo to cut the lead to three, 16-19, with less than nine minutes left in the half. NJCU went on a 9-2 run where Branden Moore contributed with seven points to take a ten point lead, 28-18 with 6:27 remaining. Ramapo would go on a 12-5 run to close out the first half and head into the locker room only down three, 30-33.
Jordan Myers scored five points during the run while
Will Brown added four and Gorman two.
In the second half, NJCU pushed their lead to ten in the first six minutes of action as they took a 43-33 lead off a jumper from Moore. Myers started an 8-0 run that was capped off by a jumper in the paint from Brown to shrink the NJCU lead to just two with 10:33 left in the game. NJCU stretched their lead to seven with a jumper from Kayton Darley, 51-44, with 6:28 on the clock before
Anthony Corbo sank a three-pointer for the Roadrunners to cut the lead to four with just over five minutes left in the game. NJCU went on a 6-2 run to close out the game and hold onto the NJAC victory.
The Roadrunners were led by Myers who scored 11 points while he added eight rebounds. Gorman tallied ten points, three rebounds and two assists while Corbo and Brown each collected nine points. Corbo added nine rebounds and three assists. Ramapo shot 40% (20-49) from the floor in the game, 25% (1-4) from the three-point line and 57% (8-14) from the free throw line.
Jefferson led NJCU with 12 points while Darley added 11 points and six rebounds. Moore posted ten points, two rebounds and one blocked shot while Jacob Valeus pulled down a team high 13 rebounds while he added four points.
The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday, December 10
th when they travel to Rowan University for a NJAC conference game at 1pm.
