Farmingdale, NY: The Farmingdale State College men's basketball team came back in overtime to defeat Ramapo College, 74-68. The Rams move to 1-1 overall while the Roadrunners open the season at 0-1 overall.
Peter Gorman posted a team high 22 points for the Roadrunners this afternoon finishing 11-25 from the field while he recorded three steals, eight rebounds and one assist.
Shane Rooney recorded his first double-double of the year with 15 points and 11 rebounds while
Will Brown contributed with 19 points, four rebounds and two steals. The Roadrunners shot 38% (27-71) from the field and 73% (14-19) from the free throw line.
Tre Riggings led the Rams with a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds while he added three blocked shots and one steal. Corey Powell added 11 points and eight rebounds while Michael Notias added ten points, including two made three-pointers. Both Riggings and Powell led the team with three blocked shots each. The Rams shot 38% (26-68) from the field, 25% (5-20) from the three-point line and 73% (17-23) from the free throw line.
The two teams played a close first half with neither team leading by more than five points. With a pair of free throws with 1:37 left in the first half, Ramapo went up 33-31 before the Rams scored four straight points to take a 35-33 lead into halftime. In the second half, the Rams led by as many as ten points with 8:07 on the clock before Ramapo battled back with a 10-1 run to come within one with 3:56 on the clock, 56-57. The two teams traded baskets before the Rams led 61-58 with 2:47 on the clock. Brown sank a basket for Ramapo before Rooney converted on one of two free throws to tie the game, 61-61 with 1:31 left in the second half. Neither team would score in the final 1:30 on the clock, sending the game into overtime.
In overtime, the Riggins converted a pair of free throws before Brown made a basket for the Roadrunners to tie the game, 63-63. The Rams then went on a mini 6-2 run capped off with a three-pointer from Zamere McKenzie for a 69-65 lead with 2:28 on the clock. Brown made a pair of free throws at 1:18 and converted one of two with 1:07 on the clock to shrink the Rams lead to one, 69-68. Riggins would convert an and-one play to stretch the lead back to four, 72-68 before Jevon Santos added a pair of free throws with 23 seconds left for the 74-68 lead.
Ramapo returns to action on Wednesday, November 16th when they travel to Sarah Lawrence College for a non-conference game at 7pm.
