Mahwah, NJ: The #8 seeded Ramapo College Roadrunners and the #9 seeded Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers Newark faced off today in the opening round of the 2021 NJAC Championship Tournament on the Mahwah campus. The Roadrunners would come out on top and earn the 4-1 win to advance in the tournament. Ramapo improves to 8-13 while Rutgers Newark wraps up the season at 2-17 overall.
With two outs in the bottom of the 1
st,
Carli Egan reached on a fielding error and later came home on a double to right center from
Mahogany Wheeler to take a 1-0 lead.
The Scarlet Raiders would tie the game at one run each in the top of the 3
rd as Masha Corbett singled to the short stop which brought home Emily Bartus. Bartus singled up the middle with one out earlier in the inning to reach base.
Thu Deo drove home
Nicole Cerasi in the bottom of the 4
th to take a 2-1 advantage. Cerasi scored as she pinch-ran for Wheeler who reached base with a double to right center leading off the inning. With two outs,
Carley Layton drove a ball over the left field fence to give Ramapo a 4-1 lead. The home run also brought in Deo.
Wheeler would close out the final innings to take the 4-1 win in Mahwah. She pitched the complete game striking out three and walking one. She let up just one run and six hits. Wheeler improves to 6-6 overall on the year.
Wheeler hit 2-3 in the game with one RBI while Deo went 1-3 with one run and one RBI. Layton hit 1-2 with one run and two RBI of her own. For Rutgers Newark, Corbett hit 2-3 with one RBI and Bartus went 2-3 with one run scored.
Paige Masiello gets the loss for Rutgers Newark as she pitched the complete game. She struck out two and walked one. She let up all four runs and six hits.
Ramapo advances to play the #1 seeded Profs of Rowan University in a best-of-three series on Friday, May 7
th at 2pm and 5pm.
