RAMAPO EARNS KEY NJAC SWEEP OVER RUTGERS-NEWARK

Newark, NJ:  The Ramapo College baseball team swept Rutgers-Newark University today in a NJAC doubleheader, 25-10 and 9-4. The Roadrunners improve to 10-8 overall and 9-7 in the NJAC while the Scarlet Raiders now stand at (1-15 overall/NJAC).
 
Game One
Kellen Hardy got the Roadrunners on the board in the top of the first inning when he drove in two runs with a double to left-center. Kyle Buser and Brian Baranok came around to score. With two outs in the inning, Matt Carvillano drilled a home run to center field which plated Hardy to push the score, 4-0.
 
In the bottom half of the inning, Rutgers-Newark scored three runs. Armando Alvarez doubled home Lisandro Uliero before Tony Liggio drove in Matthew Rypkema with an RBI ground out. Later in the inning, Nick Zobian lifted a sac fly to left field which plated Alvarez, 3-4.
 
In the top of the third inning, Hardy led off with a solo home run before Garett Wiedemann poked a two-RBI single through the left side of the infield plating Christian Alonso and Justin Garthaffner. Alonso would later score on a Scarlet Raider balk for a 7-3 lead. In the bottom half of the inning Alvarez plated Ulerio with a sac fly, 4-7.
 
Hardy would make it 9-4 Ramapo in the fourth inning with a two-run home run that plated Baranok before Alonso smacked a double down the left field line that allowed Garthaffner to score for a 10-4 lead. In the sixth inning, Alosno worked a bases loaded walk as Buser touched home plate before Wiedemann singled home Hardy, 12-4. Garthaffner would later score on a pass ball before Justin Grippo laced a double into the right-center field gap allowing Wiedemann and Alonso to score, 15-4. Grippo later scored on an error before the bases were loaded for Garthaffner who drilled a ball to center field to pick up two RBI, 18-4. Carvillano and Alonso then recorded back-to-back RBI singles, 20-4. Wiedemann laced a double to left-center field allowing Carvillano to score, 21-4. The bases were loaded once again for Grippo who plated all three runs with a double to left field, 24-4.
 
Rutgers-Newark got one run back when Liggio hit a triple to left-center field which plated Alvarez before Zobian hit a sac fly to left field which plated Liggio, 6-24. The Scarlet Raiders loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the eighth before Ethan Calcano singled home two RBI, 8-24. Ramapo added their final run in the top of the ninth when Harold Calerio hit a solo home run to left-center field before Christian Masters drove in two more Scarlet Raiders with a single to left field in the bottom half of the ninth.
 
The Roadrunners belted out 21 hits in the game including six doubles and four home runs. Andrew Case (1-0) earned the win on the mound. He struck out two and scattered seven hits in six innings pitched. Gerard Chiricolo worked two innings with four strikeouts, one walk and three hits and John Higgins pitched the final inning with one strikeout, three walks and one hit.
 
Game Two
Ramapo wasted no time in getting runs on the board in game two as Sean Donaghue blasted a grand slam. Grippo led off with a double before Brian Baranok and Hardy each walked to load the bases for Donaghue. In the bottom of the fourth, Ramapo added two runs when Grippo and Baranok each recorded RBI singles to push the score 6-0.
 
Donaghue made it 7-0 in the top of the fifth inning with his second home run of the game, this time a solo shot to left-center field. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Calcano singled home two runs with a hard hit to right field, 2-7. In the seventh inning, Ramapo added two runs to take a 9-2 lead. Wiedemann lifted a sac fly to center field allowing Alonso to score before Baranok was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home Calero.
 
The Scarlet Raiders loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth with one out before Zobian poked a single to left field allowing two runs to cross home plate, 4-9. Ramapo reliever MJ DePaola worked out of the jam by inducing two flyouts to end the inning and earn the 9-4 NJAC road win.
 
James Garthaffner (1-0) earned the win on the mound for Ramapo. He struck out nine, walked five and scattered four hits in six innings of work.  DePaola worked the final three innings as he struck out two, walked three and let up just three hits. Donaghue led the way at the plate with five RBI finishing 2-4 with two runs scored while Grippo and Alonso also recorded two hits each.
 
The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow morning when they host Rutgers-Camden University in a NJAC double header at 11:30am. The team will honor their senior class in a ceremony between games.
