BARANOK COMES UP BIG AS RAMAPO STORMS BACK IN 12-11 VICTORY

Mahwah, NJ:  The Ramapo College baseball team came back to defeat New Jersey City University 12-11 in the bottom of the ninth with a walk-off win. The Roadrunners improve to 7-6 overall, 6-5 in the NJAC while the Gothic Knights move to 4-18 overall and 2-9 in the conference.  

NJCU got on the board in the top of the first inning when Ricky Voss poked a double down the left field line that allowed Brandon Rivera to score, 1-0. Ramapo tied the game up in the bottom half of the inning when Brian Baranok came home on an infield error, 1-1. The Gothic Knights took a 2-1 lead in the second inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Ali Pompey scored on an infield ground out before Ramapo put up four runs in the bottom of the second. Justin Grippo worked a bases loaded walk which forced Harold Calero with the inning's first run. Baranok then knocked home Garrett Wiedemann before Franko scored an unearned run for the 4-2 lead. Christian Alonso drove home Kyle Buser with an RBI single extending to the lead, 5-2.
 
NJCU added one run in the third before they recorded five runs in the fourth for an 8-5 lead. The inning was highlighted by Justin Moreno's two-RBI single. Ramapo put up one run in the sixth while NJCU added two runs to their lead in the seventh to push the score, 10-6. The Roadrunners then tied the game in the seventh inning with four runs all coming with two outs. Alonso was hit by a pitch before stealing second base. Calero reached on an infield error and Alonso moved to third before Calero was lifted for pinch runner, TJ Roman. Roman stole second base before Wiedemann came up big with a hard-hit single to right-center field plating both runs. With the bases loaded, Baranok laced a single to left field allowing both Wiedemann and Bryan Franko to score to tie the game, 10-10.
 
The Gothic Knights came back with the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth setting up a walk-off opportunity for the Roadrunners in the bottom half of the inning. Mitchell Leslie doubled down the left field line before he moved to third on an infield ground out and later scored on an infield error for the 11-10 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, Joe Wisniewski reached on an infield error before being lifted for pinch runner Matt Lalomia. Lalomia stole second and moved to third on a sac bunt from Wiedemann. Franko then lifted a fly ball down the right field line behind first base, NJCU made the defensive out in foul territory which allowed Lalomia to tag up and score to tie the game, 11-11. Grippo then reached on an infield error before Baranok came up big for the Roadrunners once again. He recorded hard hit double down the left field line that allowed Grippo to come around to score for the game-winning run, 12-11.
 
Jeff Millet worked the final two innings for Ramapo as he earned the win. He struck out one, walked none and let up just one hit and one run (unearned). Tim Caufield started the game for Ramapo. He worked 3.1 innings with five strikeouts, five walks while he surrendered seven hits and six runs. Matt Ivanicki worked out of a one-out jam in the fourth inning before Will Paoli came in for the fifth through seventh innings. He struck out four, walked none and scattered three hits in relief.
 
Nick Chiappisi started the game for the Gothic Knights. He struck out two, walked five and scattered five hits and five runs in five innings of work. Aaron Ayers (1-3) took the loss in relief. He struck out six, did not walk a batter and surrendered seven runs (zero earned) in 3.2 innings.
 
Ramapo and New Jersey City return to action tomorrow afternoon in Jersey City to complete the home-and-home series. The NJAC conference game begins at 3:30pm.
