SOFTBALL SWEEPS RUTGERS-NEWARK

Mahwah, NJ:  The Ramapo College softball team swept Rutgers-Newark University today in NJAC action. The Roadrunners came back to win game one 2-1 before they held off the Scarlet Raiders in game two, 7-5.

Game One
The Scarlet Raiders took a 1-0 lead in the sixth inning before Ramapo came back with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to win the game 2-1. In the sixth, Michelle MacMillan laced a single up the middle before scoring on Alex Di Martino's single to left-center field to put Rutgers up 1-0.

In the bottom of the seventh, Ramapo had runners on first and second with no outs as Avery Bartolomeo and Thu Deo each reached on infield errors. Following a sac bunt to move each runner up one base, Melody Gleason was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Rutgers induced a pop up for the second out before Anna Messina drove the third pitch she saw into the right-center field gap allowing Bartolomeo and Deo to score to win it for Ramapo.

Mahogany Wheeler (2-5) worked a complete game in the circle for the Roadrunners. She struck out seven; walked just one and scattered five hits.

Paige Masiello (1-4) took the tough loss for Rutgers-Newark in the circle. She struck out six, walked one and scattered four hits.

Game Two
Ramapo belted out 13 hits in game two including one double and two home runs. Ramapo put up six runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning to take a 6-0 lead before Rutgers-Newark got on the board in the top of the fifth. Gleason led off with a bunt single before moved to second on a sac bunt and later scored on Messina's hard hit single up the middle for a 1-0 lead. Krista Verrino followed up with a single through the left side of the infield before stealing second base. Carli Egan then laced a double to left field plating both Messina and Verrino, 3-0. Wheeler and Bartolomeo then hit back-to-back home runs, the first of their careers, to take a 6-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth, the Scarlet Raiders got on the scoreboard with three runs of their own to cut the lead in half. Ramapo added one more run in the fifth inning to push the score 7-3. Egan drove home Jaclyn Monaco with an RBI single. Monaco poked a single through the left side of the infield earlier in the inning.

Rutgers-Newark added two runs in the sixth inning to come within two. With the bases loaded and one out, McMillan laced a single to right field platting the first run before Di Martino bounced into a fielder's choice which allowed Jackie Lara to score. Ramapo held off a Rutgers-Newark comeback in the top of the seventh as the Scarlet Raiders stranded two runners on base.

Megan Giesecke (2-5) earned the win in the circle for Ramapo in game two while Wheeler earned her first career save. Giesecke did not allow a hit in 4.2 innings of work while she struck out four, walked 10 and surrendered three runs. Wheeler came into the game in the fifth inning with two outs. She walked one and scattered five hits.

Verrino, Egan, Wheeler, Gleason and Monaco each collected two hits in the second game. Egan led the way with three RBI while Wheeler added two RBI of her own.

The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday, April 24th when they host Stockton University in a NJAC doubleheader at 1pm. Ramapo will also honor their senior class in a pre-game ceremony.
