Newark, NJ: The Rutgers-Newark University women's basketball team defeated Ramapo College 61-55 tonight at the Golden Dome in a NJAC conference matchup. The Scarlet Raiders move 3-14 overall and 1-9 in the NJAC to while the Roadrunners now stand at 8-9 overall and 2-8 in the conference.
Rutgers-Newark took a 37-24 lead into the locker room at halftime before Ramapo outscored the Scarlet Raiders 18-9 in the third period to close the gap to just four, 46-42. The Roadrunner closed out the last six minutes of the quarter on a 12-4 run that included six points from
Bridget Cahill. A 5-3 run at the start of the fourth period cut the lead to just two, 47-49 before a made basket and two free throws from Rutgers extended their lead 53-47 with less than five minutes left on the clock.
Samantha Rinaldi tacked on two more for Ramapo 49-53 with 4:17 on the clock. An and-one play from Hannah Ashby put Rutgers-Newark up 56-49 with just over two minutes left in the game before
Jenna Harsh recorded a layup for the Roadrunners. Ashby added a jumper to extend the lead 58-51 while the Scarlet Raiders added three more points to Ramapo's two to end the game with a 61-55 conference victory.
Rinaldi led the Roadrunners with 16 points, three rebounds and two assists while
Stacey Porzl added 12 points in the game. Harsh collected a career high 14 rebounds and added nine points while
Bridget Cahill tacked on six points, three rebounds and two assists. The team shot 34% (20-58) from the field, 26% (4-15) from the three-point line and 73% (11-15) from the free throw line. Ramapo grabbed 45 rebounds in the game while they forced 17 Rutgers-Newark turnovers.
Four Scarlet Raiders scored in double figures as they were led by Ashby with 17 points while she pulled down a team high seven rebounds. Syncere Lambert posted 11 points while Elisha India Cross and Louisa Ann Borja each collected ten points and three rebounds. The team shot 37% (22-59) from the field, 27% (5-18) from the three-point line and 60% (12-20) from the free throw line. Rutgers-Newark grabbed 38 rebounds in the game while they forced 24 Ramapo turnovers.
The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday, January 25th when they host Stockton University at 3pm. The Ramapo College basketball teams are teaming up with NABC and the American Cancer Society to host a Coaches vs. Cancer Day on Saturday. The teams will donate all tickets sales and individual donations to the American Cancer Society which this year, is earmarking all the funds to Childhood Cancer Research.
