Union, NJ: The Ramapo College baseball team dropped a tough match-up to the Lions of the College of New Jersey today, 9-4 to be eliminated from the NJAC Championship Tournament. With the loss the Roadrunners fall to 25-14 and look for a possible at-large bid to the NCAA Championships, the announcement coming Monday, May 13th.
The Lions got on the scoreboard to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning as Thomas Persichetti walked and later came home as Jacob Simon reached on a fielder's choice. TCNJ continued to tack on runs as they scored three in the 2nd to go ahead, 4-0. Joe Oczkowski, Matt Giacose and Danny Borup would each score one of their own.
Ramapo didn't sit back as they cut the lead in half (2-4) in the 3rd as Bryan Franko crossed the plate on a single from Philip Mahlik, and Matt Carovillano would also score as he came home when Kyle Buser reached on a fielder's choice. The Lions would tack on a fifth run to lead 5-2 in the bottom of the inning. Tommy McCarthy doubled to lead off the inning and with two outs, would score as Gary Otten singled up the middle.
With two outs in the 4th and bases loaded, Mahlik dropped a double up the left field line which drove home Franko and Vincenzo Sita to put Ramapo within one, 4-5. Sita singled to left field and Franko reached on a fielder's choice.
A deep fly ball to center from McCarthy brought home David Cardona for the Lions to go ahead, 6-4 in the 6th before Otten, Borup and Giacose each scored in the 7th to lead, 9-4. The score would hold as the Roadrunners could not connect falling in the double-elimination tournament.
McCarthy hit 2-4 with one run and one RBI while Oczkowski hit 2-5 with a run. Otten went 2-3 with one run and one RBI and Cordona hit a perfect 2-2 with one run and two RBI.
For Ramapo, Sita hit 3-5 with one run scored and Franko went 1-4 scoring two runs. Kyle Buser drove in a run and Carovillano scored one of his own.
Joseph Felipe gets the win as he pitched four innings striking out four and letting up no runs. Nick Recarte gets the loss for Ramapo in 1.2 innings. He let up four runs, five hits and struck out one.
The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow, May 8th when they travel to Western Connecticut for a 4pm start.
