Bryan Franko knocked in the game-winning RBI in the 11th inning for the Ramapo College baseball team as the Roadrunners defeated New York University, 6-5. The Roadrunners wrap up the regular season with a 26-14 overall record while the Violets stand at 26-13 on the year.
NYU took a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning before the Roadrunners tied the game with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Franko walked on four pitches before moving to second on a pass ball. Senior
Liam Duffy then laced a one-out double to left field as Franko came around to touch home plate. Following the second out of the inning, junior
Kellen Hardy drew a walk before senior
Vincenzo Sita drove Duffy home with a hard hit double down the left field line to tie the game, 2-2.
Ramapo went up 3-2 in the fifth when junior
Kyle Buser drove home Franko with an RBI single up the middle. Rookie
Kyle Lisa recorded his first career home run in the sixth inning, a solo shot over the left field wall to extend the Roadrunner lead, 4-2. In the seventh inning, Duffy led off with a walk before advancing all the way to third base on an overthrow on a pick-off attempt by NYU. After a fly-ball out that was not deep enough to score Duffy, he later came home on a wild pitch for a three-run lead, 5-2.
With two outs in the top of the ninth inning for NYU, the Violets came back with three runs to tie the game 5-5. Francis Prior hit a big two-out triple into the right-center field gap to plate two runs. He later scored on Jack Walter's bunt single to tie the game.
Neither team would score until the 11th inning when Ramapo plated the game-winning run.
Garett Wiedemann ripped a single to lead off before Lisa put down a sac bunt to move him to second base. Franko became the hero of the game as he took the first pitch he saw into the right-center field gap which allowed Wiedemann to score, 6-5.
Junior
Jeff Millet (3-0) earned the win on the mound for the Roadrunners in relief. He struck out three, walked two and scattered two hits in 2.1 innings of work. Junior
Kevin Stewart started on the mound for Ramapo, he struck out eight, walked two and surrendered five hits and two runs in six innings of work. Senior
Kyle Haag pitched the seventh and eighth innings for Ramapo and did not give up a hit or run while he struck out two and walked just one. Senior
Greg Westhelle scattered four hits while he surrendered three runs in 2/3 inning of work in the 9th.
Duffy led the team at the plate finishing 3-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Franko finished 1-3 with two runs scored and one RBI while Buser, Sita and Lisa all collected one hit for Ramapo.
The Roadrunners will wait to hear if they earn a NCAA at-large bid when the bracket is announced on NCAA.com with a selection show on Monday at noon.
