Mahwah, NJ: The Kean University baseball team used two big innings to defeat Ramapo College 14-6 this afternoon in NJAC conference action. The Cougars improve to 18-10 overall, 5-2 in the conference while the Roadrunners now stand at 13-10 overall and 4-3 in the NJAC.
Kean scored two runs in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Frank LoGiudice knocked home John Carello with an RBI single through the left side of the infield before starting pitcher Zachary Marzano bought home LoGiudice with an RBI ground out.
Ramapo would cut the lead to one when they scored their first run in the bottom of the third inning.
Kyle Lisa ripped a double down the left field line before he advanced to third on a pop fly to right field.
Liam Duffy drove him home with a single to left field, 1-2.
The Cougars scored five runs in the top of the fourth on three hits as they took a 7-1 lead. The inning was highlighted by Chris Vetter's two RBI single to plate the final two runs of the inning before the Roadrunners got out of the jam. Kean added one run in the fifth and six runs in the sixth to extend the lead 14-1.
The Roadrunners added one run in the sixth.
Nick Cuba doubled down the left field line allowing
Kellen Hardy to score. Hardy was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning, 2-14. In the eighth, Ramapo tacked on one more run when
Garett Wiedemann laced a single up the middle with two outs and later scored from third base on a wild pitch, 3-14. Ramapo loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth before
Nick Camilleri plated
Matt Carovillano with an RBI fielder's choice. Wiedemann walked to reload the bases with two outs before
Derek Romberg plated the final two runs with a double in the right-center field gap allowing
Philip Mahlik and Camilleri to come home, 6-14. Kean induced a foul out to first base to end the game to earn the 14-6 road win.
Kean pounded out 14 hits in the game while six players recorded two hits in the game. Marzano (1-0) struck out five, walked three and scattered five Ramapo hits in seven innings of work. Kyle Piekarz worked the final two innings for the Cougars, he surrendered five hits and four runs.
Kyle Haag (2-2) worked the first 3.1 innings for Ramapo on the mound. He struck out four, walked none, scattered three hits while letting up five runs (three earned). Ten different Roadrunners recorded a hit in the game while Romberg led the team with two RBI.
The two teams will return to action tomorrow afternoon at 3:30pm at Jim Hynes '62 Stadium in Union, NJ to wrap up the home-and-home series.
