SOFTBALL SPLITS IN FINAL DAY AT THE SPRING GAMES

Clermont, FL:  The Ramapo College softball team split a pair of games in their final day at The Spring Games, defeating Allegheny College 14-5 before they fell to Bowdoin University 10-1 in six innings. The Roadrunners now stand at 6-6 overall.
 
Game one
The Roadrunners belted out 17 hits against Allegheny including four doubles and two home runs. Ramapo scored in the top of the first inning when Carli Egan drove home Jackie Howarth with an RBI single, 1-0. Howarth led off the game with a single through the right side of the infield.
 
The Gators took the lead in the bottom of the first, 2-1. Runners were on first and second with one out before each moved up one base on a wild pitch. Hayley Behr drove home Paige Ziggas on an infield ground out before a throwing error on the same play from Ramapo allowed Samantha Valera to score for the go ahead run. Ramapo took the lead back in the top of the second inning when Olivia Wang connected on her second home run of the season. Wang blasted a two-run home run over the left field wall, plating Kendra Decker for the 3-2 lead.
 
Allegheny tied the game in the bottom of the second when Joplin Osgood singled home pinch runner Harrison-pet, 3-3. Ramapo would break open the game in the third inning scoring six runs on five hits for a 9-3 lead. Kristen Ruggiero led off with a double, moved to third on a sac bunt before Sarah Browning knocked her in with a hard-hit single to center field 4-3. Following a pitching change, Olivia Mahon reached on an error to put runners on first and second with one out. Wang then drove home Browning with a single before Jackie Howarth was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Krista Verrino then drove home two runs with a single to left before Howarth and Verrino moved up to third and second respectively with a double steal. Egan then drove them home with a single through the left side of the infield to push the score 9-3.
 
Ramapo added three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Howarth doubled and Verrino walked before they pulled off another double steal to get into scoring position with no outs. Egan then laced a double down the left field line allowing both runners to score, 11-3. Egan would come around to score when pinch hitter Kasie McNichol poked an RBI single to left field, 12-3. Ruggerio went into pitch for Ramapo to start the fifth inning before Behr knocked in two runs with a two RBI double for the Gators, 5-12.
 
The Roadrunners added their final two runs of the game in the top of the seventh when Harper Patsko connected on her first home run of the season over the left field wall. Patsko drove home Ruggiero who led off the inning with a single, 14-5. Ruggiero and the Ramapo defense held the Gators in the bottom of the seventh for the victory.
 
Jessica Becchetti (3-1) earned the win on the mound for Ramapo, she struck out three, walked one and scattered three Gator hits. Ruggiero worked the final three innings as she walked two and surrendered just three hits.
 
Egan led the Roadrunners at the plate with five RBI as she finished 3-5 with one run scored. Decker also posted three hits and one run scored while Howarth, Verrino, Ruggiero and Wang all collected two hits each.
 
Game two
Bowdoin recorded 11 hits and ten runs as they defeated Ramapo 10-1 in six innings. They scored two runs in the first and fourth innings before they added three more runs in the top of the fifth for a 7-0 lead.
 
The Roadrunners tacked on their lone run in the bottom of the fifth when Verrino doubled with one out and advanced to third on an infield ground out. Ruggiero walked to put runners on the corners with two outs before Patsko drove home Verrino with a single.
 
The Bears added three more runs in the sixth inning to push the score 10-1. Ramapo could not score in the bottom half of the sixth as Bowdoin would take the run ruled shortened game.
 
Decker led the Roadrunners finishing 2-3 while six other Roadrunners each collected one hit in the game. Ramapo starting pitcher Erin Fitzsimmons (3-5) worked five innings with three strikeouts, three walks and scattering nine hits. Becchetti pitched the final inning of the game surrendering two hits, three runs while recording two walks.
 
The Roadrunners return to action at home Wednesday, March 27th when they travel to New Paltz for a non-conference double header starting at 3pm.
