Auburndale, FL: The Red Hawks of Ripon College defeated the Ramapo College baseball team 6-4 at the Russ Matt Tournament. Ramapo College falls to 4-5 overall while the Red Hawks improve to 2-5.
Kellen Hardy and
Anthony Kuzmenko both led the Roadrunners hitting 2-4. Hardy plated one run and Kuzmenko collected three RBI.
Kyle Buser and
Bryan Franko both went 1-3 each plating a run. The Roadrunners belted out eight hits in the game.
Ripon strung together five hits in the first inning to score three runs taking the early lead, 3-0.
Kyle Buser led off the fourth inning for the Roadrunners by sending the ball deep into center field for a triple.
Vincenzo Sita drove him home on an infield ground out, 1-3. Ripon answered back tacking on one more run in the fifth inning when Nick Taranto reached on an error and crossed home plate when Tyler Nelson laced the ball to right field, 4-1.
Ramapo came within one of the Red Hawks in the fifth inning when both Franko and
Justin Grippo came home off a single through the right side of the infield from Kuzmenko. Franko led off the inning with a single, Grippo reached on an infield error, and both advanced one base on a pass ball, before coming home, 3-4. Ripon would score two more in the sixth inning. Jacob Pankratz singled to the shortstop before Michael Barnes stepped up to bat sending the ball deep into center field allowing Pankratz to cross home plate in what would be the winning run. Barnes scored when Joey Garza reached on a throwing error, 6-3. The Roadrunners would tack on another run in the ninth when Kuzmenko drew a bases loaded walk to plate Hardy who doubled earlier in the inning, 4-6. The bases were loaded for Ramapo with two outs before relief pitcher Brody Marks got out of the jam with an infield ground out to end the game and earn the save. Brice Swick (1-1) earned the win on the mound for Ripon, he struck out nine, walked four and scattered eight hits over 8.2 innings of work.
CJ Growney started on the mound for the Roadrunners pitching 5.1 innings. He struck out nine, walked one and scattered 11 hits while surrendering six runs (four earned).
Kyle Haag would come in as relief and would pitch 2.2 innings striking out four batters.
Jeff Millet pitched the final inning walking two batters and striking out two.
The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow in a double-header match-up against St. Norbert College at 3:15pm at the Russ Matt Tournament.
