SOFTBALL FALLS TO BENEDICTINE 3-0, COMES BACK TO DEFEAT MARIAN 7-3

Kissimmee, FL: The Ramapo College softball team fell to Benedictine University 3-0 in game one before they defeated Marian University 7-3 in game two. The Roadrunners stand at 4-4 overall.
 
Game One
The Eagles (6-2 overall) pushed one run across in the bottom of the first inning and added two late runs in the sixth as they defeated the Roadrunners 3-0. Skraba led off with a single, Fast was hit by a pitch before each moved up on a stolen base with no outs. Ramapo starting pitcher Erin Fitzsimmons recorded back-to-back strikeouts before Moore knocked home Skraba to put Benedictine on the board 1-0.
 
Ramapo looked to tie the game in the top of the fourth when Carli Egan ripped a double with one out before Kristen Ruggiero laced a single into right field to put runners on the corners. The Eagles got out of the jam with a strikeout and foul out to end the threat and preserve the 1-0 lead. The Roadrunners once again put the tying and winning runs on base in the sixth inning but came up short as Eagle starting pitcher induced a pop fly to left field and a strikeout to end the inning.
 
Benedictine tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, the Ramapo defense came up big with a play at the plate on an infield grounder before an error on a pop fly behind second base allowed two runs to cross home plate for the Eagles 3-0. Alexandra Loizon sent the Roadrunners down 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh to earn the win. She scattered seven Ramapo hits while she struck out five and walked none to earn the shutout.
 
Fitzsimmons (2-3) took the hard luck loss for Ramapo as she struck out four, walked none and scattered six hits. Egan, Ruggiero and Sarah Browning all finished the game 2-3 at the plate.
 
Game two
Marian (7-4) got on the board first in the top of the third inning with one run before Ramapo took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning. Meagher led off the inning with a walk and later scored on an infield error for the 1-0 lead. Kendra Decker reached on an infield error in the bottom of the third before the Roadrunners took the lead with two outs. Krista Verrino popped single down the right field line to put runners on the corners before Carli Egan ripped a triple into the left-center field gap to pick up two RBI.
 
Marian took a 3-2 lead in the fifth when Cozzi drove home two runs with a hard-hit single in the hole at second base which plated Strainis and Rodriguez. The Roadrunners would come back with five runs in the sixth inning to regain the lead. Egan led off with a single before she moved to third following a throwing error by the Sabres put runners on first and third with no outs. Patsko put down a bunt single and Egan was able to cross home plate to tie the game 3-3. With the bases loaded, Kendra Decker came up big with a single through the left side of the infield as Ruggiero and Patsko scored to take a 5-3 lead. Following the second out of the inning, the bases were loaded once again for Verrino who laced a single to left field plating Decker and Olivia Wang to extend the lead 7-3.
 
The Sabres put two runners on with one out in the seventh before the Ramapo defense got the final two outs of the game for the 7-3 victory. Erin Fitzsimmons (3-3) earned the win in relief working the final three innings. She struck out three, walked one and scattered three hits. Jessica Becchetti earned the no-decision as she worked the first four innings with two strikeouts, four walks and scattering three hits.
 
Egan and Verrino led the Roadrunners both going 2-4 with two RBI and one run scored while Decker finished 1-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.
 
Ramapo returns to action tomorrow afternoon when they take on Concordia University (WI) (4-5 overall) at 11:15pm and Tufts University (8-0 overall and received votes in the latest NFCA Top 25 Poll) at 6pm. Both games will be played at Hancock Park field #3.
