RUGGIERO, EGAN LEAD RAMAPO IN WIN OVER ST. NORBERT 5-1

RAMAPO FALLS TO WOOSTER 11-2 IN FIVE INNINGS IN GAME ONE

Clermont, FL:  The Ramapo College softball team fell to the College of Wooster 11-2 in five innings before they defeated St. Norbert College 5-1 in game two of the day. The Roadrunners even their overall record to 2-2.
 
Game one
Bases were loaded with one out in the top of the first inning when Gabby Lakes drew a walk for Wooster (5-4 overall) that forced home Kendall Lloyd with the game's first run 1-0. An infield error brought home the second run before Wooster starting pitcher Olivia Johnson helped her own cause with a grand slam over the right-center field fence, 6-0.
 
The Roadrunners (1-2 overall) would get one run back in the bottom half of the first inning. Jackie Howarth walked and advanced to third on Krista Verrino's hard hit single through the left side of the infield. Verrino advanced on the throw to put runners at second and third with no outs. Carli Egan drove home Howarth with a single to center field to put the Roadrunners on the board before Johnson was able to record three straight strikeouts to end the Ramapo threat.
 
In the top of the second inning, Marina Roski connected on a two-run home run, pushing the score to 8-1 while they added three more runs in the third inning for an 11-1 lead. With the bases loaded, pinch runner Rachel Ginsburg scored on a wild pitch before Lloyd and Grace Randall both knocked in a run with RBI groundouts.
 
Ramapo added their second run of the game in the bottom half of the third inning. Howarth led off with a triple down the left field line before she scored on an infield groundout by Egan. Johnson would send the Roadrunners down in order in their final two at-bats to earn the win for Wooster. Johnson (3-1) surrendered just four Ramapo hits while she struck out seven and walked one. Johnson also finished 3-3 at the plate with four RBI and one run scored. Cooke finished 2-4 with one run scored while Roski went 1-3 with two RBI and one run scored.
 
Fitzsimmons (0-2) worked into the third inning for Ramapo. She surrendered seven hits, 11 runs (five earned) and struck out one. Jessica Becchetti came into the game in relief in the third inning with the bases loaded. She let up just one hit in the final three innings of work.
 
Howarth, Verrino, Egan and Olivia Mahon each collected a hit for Ramapo. Howarth scored both Ramapo runs while Egan collected both RBI.
 
Game two
Each team had opportunities to score early in the game but it was Ramapo who finally pushed two runs across the plate in the top of the fifth inning. Kristen Ruggiero led off with a double to straight away center field before Jackie Howarth singled through the left side of the infield to put runners on the corners with one out. Howarth stole second before Carli Egan lifted a double into the left-center field gap plating both runs for the 2-0 lead.
 
Ramapo added two more runs in the sixth inning. Following a pitching change to start the inning for St. Norbert, Kendra Decker walked and moved to second on a sac bunt from Olivia Mahon. With two outs, Ruggiero came up big once again for the Roadrunners with a double to left field which allowed Decker to score 3-0. Carla Goodwin beat out an infield single while Ruggiero moved to third to once again put runners on first and third with two outs. Howarth then laced a single through the left side of the infield allowing Ruggiero to score for the 4-0 lead.
 
The Roadrunners tacked on one more run in the top of the seventh inning when Mahon lifted a sac fly to right field which allowed Egan to score 5-0. Egan led off the inning with a double to the left field wall. St. Norbert added their lone run in the bottom of the seventh.  With two outs Abigail Chada bounced a single up the middle which plated Randi Morack. Morack led off the inning with bloop single down the left field line. Ramapo starting pitcher Erin Fitzsimmons induced a groundout to Harper Patsko at third base who fired to Sarah Browning at first base for the final out of the game.
 
Fitzsimmons (1-2) went the distance for Ramapo as she scattered five hits and struck out four in the complete game win. Egan finished 2-4 with two RBI while Ruggiero finished 2-2 with two runs scored and one RBI. Howarth and Verrino each collected two hits while Mahon and Goodwin collected one hit each.
 
Ellie Olsen (0-2) took the loss for St. Norbert. She struck out two, walked one and surrendered six hits and two runs. Morack led the team at the plate finishing 2-4 with one run scored.
 
The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow afternoon at The Spring Game at the Osceola County Softball Complex. They take on St. Norbert College at 2pm and St. Joseph's College Long Island (NY) at 4:15pm, both games are on field two.
