SOFTBALL SPLITS ON OPENING DAY

Kissimmee, FL: The Ramapo College softball team split the 2019 opening double header today at The Spring Games. The Roadrunners (1-1 overall) fell to Gettysburg College 4-0 in game one before they shutout Thomas More University, 2-0.
 
Gettysburg (7-4) got on the board in the top of the third inning with two runs. Sarahrose Jonik recorded a leadoff single before Shelby Baker connected on her first homerun of the season over the right-center field wall, 2-0. The Bullets added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning when Rachel Julie led off with a triple and later scored on an infield error by the Roadrunners, 3-0. Sophia Blasius reached on the error, moved to second on a sac bunt before she advanced to third on a pass ball. Brooke Studnik then laced a single through the left side of the infield to plate the fourth run of the game. The Bullets held Ramapo in their final two at-bats for the shutout win, 4-0.
 
Gettysburg starting pitcher Morgan Clauser struck out 13 in the complete game victory. She held the Roadrunners scoreless through three innings of action while tossing a two-hit shutout moving to 6-1 on the year.
 
Erin Fitzsimmons took the loss for Ramapo, surrendering nine hits in the complete game. She struck out three, walked one and let up four runs (two earned).
 
In game two against Thomas More, the Roadrunners scored two runs in the top of the first inning while the defense kept the Saints off the scoreboard, along with strong pitching in the circle.
 
Jackie Howarth walked to lead off the top of the first for Ramapo before Krista Verrino singled through the left side of the infield. Carli Egan then put down a bunt single to load the bases with no outs before Harper Patsko drew a bases loaded walk to force home Howarth, 1-0. With one out, Sarah Browning plated Verrino with a sac fly to left field push the score 2-0.
 
Ramapo starting pitcher Jessica Becchetti earned her first collegiate win of her career in her first start. She struck out three, walked four and scattered three hits in five innings of work. Erin Fitzsimmons entered the game in the bottom of the 6th with no outs and runners on first and second and held the Saints to earn the two-inning save. Fitzsimmons struck out three, walked none and let up just one hit in her third career save.
 
Olivia Jackson (2-1) took the loss for the Saints, working just the first inning, she struck out one and walked two.
 
The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow morning when they take on The College of Wooster at 9am and St. Norbert College at 4:15pm.
