Mahwah, NJ: The Montclair State University women's basketball team handed Ramapo College their first loss of the season tonight in New Jersey Athletic Conference action in overtime, 61-56. The Roadrunners now stand at 7-1 overall, 1-1 in the NJAC while the Red Hawks move to 4-2 overall, 2-0 in the conference.
The Roadrunners were led by
Samantha Rinaldi with 19 points while
Stacey Porzl netted 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. The team shot 19-67 (28%) from the field and 16-23 (70%) from the free throw line. The Red Hawks were led by Taylor Brown as she posted 23 points and seven rebounds. Alex McKinnon collected 13 points and seven rebounds while Cerys MacLelland pulled down 16 rebounds. The team was 19-66 (29%) from the field and 16-33 (49%) from the free throw line.
Ramapo jumped out to a four-point lead when
Jenna Harsh passed the ball to
Bridget Cahill who sank a three-point shot, 9-5. The two teams traded layups before the Red Hawks would net five points in the final minute of the first quarter giving them the lead, 12-11. Ramapo would go on a mini 5-0 run sparked by Porzl on an and-one play and capped off by Harsh with a layup, 22-18. Montclair would net four points over 38 seconds to tie the game at 22.
Ramapo came out of the locker room to extend their lead to five when
Alie Wickersheim grabbed a rebound and was able to capitalize on an and-one play, 27-22. A three-point shot from Taylor Brown would bring the Red Hawks within one, 26-27. The Roadrunners would go on a 10-0 run behind six points from Rinaldi to give the team a 40-29 lead. Nicole Carter sparked a mini 6-1 run with a layup for Montclair, 39-44. Brown would sink a crucial three-point shot with 4:16 left to play in the game bringing the Red Hawks within three of the Roadrunners, 44-47. Harsh would answer back for the Roadrunners with a three-point shot of her own before Montclair would tack on four points, 48-50. With just over a minute and a half left to play Brown would net another three-pointer from the top of the key before MacLelland would be sent to the line to make the first of a two-shot foul to tie the game at 52. These would be the final points of regulation sending the teams into overtime.
Brown opened the overtime banking a three-point shot followed by McKinnon tacking on two exactly two minutes later, 57-52. Rinaldi added two for Ramapo before tacking on two more with just over 30 seconds to play, 56-57. Montclair would score four more points giving the Roadrunners their first loss of the season, 61-56.
The Roadrunners return to action when they travel to Stockton University on Saturday, December 7th for a 3pm conference game.
