Mahwah, NJ: Montclair State University outlasted the Ramapo College men's basketball team today in New Jersey Athletic Conference action, 80-76. The Red Hawks improve to 4-2 overall, 2-0 in the NJAC while the Roadrunners now stand at 3-3 overall, 0-2 in the conference.
Four Roadrunners scored in double digits, led by
Connor Romano who had a career high of 24 points and seven rebounds.
Rob McWilliams tallied 16 points and pulled down eight rebounds while
Jason Battle netted 13 points.
Matt Latka scored 10 while collecting seven rebounds while
Jordan Zagadou collected eight rebounds. The team shot 38% (27-71) from the field and 69% (20-29) from the free throw line. The Red Hawks were led by Eddie Emedoh with netted 17 points and pulled down 11 rebounds while Akbar Hoffman collected 10 and Justin Porter had ten rebounds. The team shot 45% (26-58) from the field and 65% (17-26) from the line.
Montclair jumped to a five-point lead off a mini 6-0 run before Romano would sink 12 points during a 14-0 run for the Roadrunners giving them the lead, 17-8. Steve Breeman would end the run with a three-point shot which would spark another run for the Red Hawks bringing them within one. The two teams would play evenly until Emedoh would make a layup sparking a 10-2 run in just over two minutes of play to take a 40-30 lead. Latka and Battle would score back-to-back layups closing the gap to seven with 1:25 left to play in the half, 36-43. Montclair would score the final four points of the half heading into the locker room with the lead, 47-36.
McWilliams came out of the locker room to spark a mini 6-0 run for the Roadrunners to close the gap to five, 42-47. In 2:43 of play the Red Hawks would go on to score 11 points to Ramapo's four, capped off by a three-point shot from Nate Nahirny, extending the lead to 11, 63-52. Latka would score back-to-back baskets to close bring the Roadrunners back within seven. The two teams would go on to trade free throws before the Roadrunners would go on a 10-2 run capped off by a long jump shot from McWilliams to tie the game at 69 with 5:03 left to play. Montclair answered back with a 7-0 run behind five points from Nahirny before a jump shot from Battle and a tip-in from Zagadou brought the Roadrunners within three, 73-76. Montclair would go on to sink four more points to the Roadrunners three taking the victory, 80-76.
The Roadrunners return to action as they travel to Stockton University on Saturday, December 7th for a 1pm conference match-up.
