New London, CT: The Colby College men's basketball team came back in overtime to defeat Ramapo College 103-97 tonight in non-conference action. The Mules open the season at 1-0 overall while the Roadrunners move to 1-1 on the year.
Both teams had five players score in double figures while Ramapo's
Rob McWilliams led both teams with 25 points. Colby's scoring leader was Alex Dorion who tallied 23 points off the bench including 7-10 from the three-point line.
Ramapo held the lead for the first 15 minutes of action in the first half before Colby tied the game for the fourth time with a three-pointer from Noah Tyson before Matt Hanna put in a layup for a 29-27 score. A basket from
Marquise Kindel tied the game for the fifth time in the half 29-29 with 5:29 to play. Tyson sank another three-pointer to push the Colby lead 32-30, a lead they would stretch to eight heading into the locker room up 43-35 at halftime.
At the start of the second half, Colby pushed the lead to double digits for the first time in the game, 45-35 off a layup from Tyson. McWilliams hit a jumper for the Roadrunners before Wallace Tucker hit a jumper and a free throw for a 48-37 score with 18:06 on the clock. Colby would take a 55-45 lead with a three-pointer from Alex Dorion before Ramapo went on a 10-2 run to cut the lead to two with just over 13 minutes left to play. Dorion and McWilliams traded three-pointers before McWilliams hit a jumper to come within one of the lead 59-60. Back-to-back three-pointers from Williams and Dorion pushed the Colby lead back to 66-59 with under ten minutes on the clock. Ramapo would cut the lead to four before Colby's next three baskets would be three-pointers. Colby was up 78-74 on a three from Dorion with 4:21 on the clock before
Matt Latka made the front end of a two shot foul 75-78. Sam Jefferson sank a pair of free throws for Colby before
Jason Battle converted on an and-one play with a layup and free throw to cut the lead to 78-80 with 3:06 on the clock. A three-pointer from Dorion and layup from Hanna stretched the lead back to seven with just over two minutes left in the game before McWilliams hit a jumper and free throw while Latka sank a pair of free throws to come within two 83-85 with 1:33 on the clock. Back-to-back layups from Latka and
Travis Bennett would put Ramapo up 87-85 with 21 seconds remaining. Following a timeout, Colby's Sam Jefferson nailed a layup to tie the game 87-87 with 11 seconds left on the clock. The Roadrunners committed a turnover with two second left allowing Colby to gain control prior to a timeout. The Mules got a last second three-pointer off from Williams but it would not fall sending the game into overtime.
Colby struck first in the overtime period with a layup from Hanna before Jefferson hit two free throws for a 91-87 lead.
Connor Romano hit back-to-back baskets for Ramapo while Bennett hit a jumper to take a two-point lead 93-91 with 3:04 on the clock. Wallace Tucker and Hanna nailed back-to-back three-pointers for Colby to regain the lead for good 97-93 with under two minutes on the clock. McWilliams hit a layup for the Roadrunners before Jefferson put one in for Colby for a 99-95 score with 1:15 to go. Dean Weiner and Bennett traded two made free throws as Colby held a 101-97 lead with 18 seconds remaining. Tyson scored the final points of the game for the Mules in a pair of free throws 103-97 as Colby came away with a non-conference victory.
Dorian finished 7-10 from the three-point line and 8-12 from the field while Jefferson and Tyson each collected 17 points while Tyson led the team with ten rebounds. Hanna posted 16 points while Tucker added 15 for the Mules. The team shot 48% (34-70) from the field, 39% (17-43) from the three-point line and 78% (18-23) from the free throw line. The Mules also grabbed 44 rebounds in the game.
For the Roadrunners McWilliams finished 11-18 from the field and a team high 25 points. Battle and Latka each tallied 16 points while Bennett came off the bench and tallied 15 points and a team high eight rebounds. Romano contributed with 13 points and a team high four assists. The team shot 54% (37-68) from the field, 27% (3-11) from the three-point line and 62% (20-32) from the free throw line.
The Roadrunners will take on host Connecticut College tomorrow at 4pm in non-conference action.
