Ewing, NJ: The College of New Jersey women's basketball team remained undefeated (7-0) in the New Jersey Athletic Conference with a 71-53 win over Ramapo College. The Lions improved to 8-5 overall while the Roadrunners now stand at 6-8 overall and 1-6 in the conference.
While the lead changed five times and the score was tied six times in the game the Lions used a strong second half to pull away from Ramapo. The Roadrunners went into the locker room up one 25-24. Ramapo's biggest lead came in the second period when they led with 5:43 on the clock 15-11 with a made basket from
Alie Wickersheim. TCNJ would tie the game on a three-pointer from Lauren Barlow before
Jenna Harsh went on a mini 7-3 run of her own for another four-point lead 23-19 with 3:29 left in the second quarter. A three-pointer from Rachel Gazzola cut the Ramapo lead to one before
Tia Solomon and Shannon Devitt traded baskets at the end of the half as Ramapo went into the locker room up one 25-24.
Harsh got the Roadrunners going in the third period with a basket before a three-pointer from Samantha Famulare tied the game for the fifth time 27-27. Wickersheim and Famulare once again traded baskets for each team which tied the game for the final time 29-29 with less than eight minutes left in the third period. Harsh knocked down a three for Ramapo for a 32-29 lead before TCNJ would go on an 8-0 run which gave them a 37-32 lead. The Lions would extend their lead to double digits for the first time in the game with 1:48 left on the clock in the third when Famulare sank a pair of free throws 46-36. Ramapo cut the lead to five 48-43 in the final minutes of the period with a 7-2 run, including a three-pointer from
Jessica Repasy to cap off the run. In the fourth period, the Roadrunners would cut the lead to three with a basket from Wickersheim before TCNJ went on a 15-0 run to stretch their lead 63-45 with less than 4:45 left in the game. In the final four minutes of action each team added eight points as the Lions came away with a 71-53 victory.
Three players scored in double figures for the Roadrunners as
Tia Solomon collected a double-double ten points and a team high 13 rebounds and three blocks. Harsh posted a team high 19 points including 3-4 from beyond the three-point line while she added five rebounds. Wickersheim finished 6-10 from the field collecting 13 points while
Samantha Rinaldi and Repasy each contributed with four points and five rebounds. The team shot 35% (20-56) from the field, 30% (4-13) from the three-point line and 50% (9-18) from the free throw line. The Roadrunners forced 10 TCNJ turnovers which led to nine points for Ramapo.
TCNJ was led by Devitt who tallied a team high 17 points and 15 rebounds while Gazzola collected 14 points as she finished 4-5 from beyond the three-point line. Famulare tallied ten points and Kate O'Leary contributed with nine points and three assists. The team shot 42% (26-61) from the field, 40% (10-25) from the three-point line and 56% (9-16) from the free throw line.
The Roadrunners return to action on Wednesday, January 9th when they travel to NJAC rival New Jersey City University at 6pm.
