Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College field hockey team defeated Union College 5-3 in non-conference action. With the win the Roadrunners improve to 2-5 overall while the Dutchwomen now stand at 3-2 on the year.
The Roadrunners took a quick 2-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game when
Victoria Ewanis and
Autumn Laird each scored goals to put Ramapo on the board. Ewanis opened the game with a goal (1:02) off a pass from
Melissa Choka before Laird (2:12) redirected a pass from
Claudia Wetzel.
Union scored in the 6th minute of the game (5:39) when Laura Wind tallied her second goal of the season off a pass from Cici Lyne. Choka then scored a goal of her own, unassisted, just five minutes later (9:54) for a 3-1 lead. Wetzel then took a pass from Cacoso late in the first half (27:15) to push the Ramapo lead 4-1 before Katie Talacci scored her fifth goal of the year for Union as the Dutchwomen came within two 4-2. Ramapo held a slight 9-7 edge in shots in the first half while each team recorded two penalty corners.
In the second half, Leyland recorded her team leading sixth goal of the season off a pass from Alexa Puleio in the 46th minute (45:29) to come within one before Cacoso scored her team leading fourth goal of the year, unassisted, to extend the Roadrunner lead 5-3. Cacoso's unassisted goal came in the 65th minute (64:49). Union recorded three more chances to score in the game but Ramapo goalie
Samantha Stolker tallied two big saves to earn the non-conference victory. The Roadrunners held a slight 16-15 edge in shots in the game while each team recorded six penalty corners. Stolker posted seven saves while
Stacey Faria earned a defensive save for Ramapo. Mary Beth Rudolf tallied six saves for Union and Lindsay Barson posted one defensive save.
The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday, September 22nd when they host Immaculata University at the Athletic Center Turf Field at 1pm.
