Austin Unglaub drove home the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Ramapo College baseball team came back to defeat NJAC rival Kean University 6-5 today at Jeff Maund Field. The Roadrunners improve to 15-8 overall, 2-2 in the NJAC while the Cougars drop to 11-14 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
The Roadrunners got on the board with one run in the bottom of the first inning when senior
Bobby Shannon drove home senior
Matt Chemis with a single to left field for a quick 1-0 lead. Ramapo added three runs in the third inning on three hits. The bases were loaded with no outs when junior
Vincenzo Sita plated two runs with a RBI single through the left side of the infield allowing senior
Connor Walsh and Shannon to score. Following an infield error the bases were loaded once again as junior
Chris Nierva plated senior
Joe Maugeri with an infield ground out for a 4-0 lead.
Kean scratched one run across in the top of the fourth inning as John Carello plated Nick Polizzano with a RBI single 4-1. The Cougars began their come back in the fifth when they added two runs to come within one 4-3 before they added a pair in the eighth inning. Brian Cole connected on his first home run of the season, a two-run shot over the left field fence for a 6-4 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth. Following a lead off single from rookie
Anthony Kuzmenko the Roadrunners would strand two runners on base as Kean got out of a jam with runners on first and second and no outs.
Junior
Kevin Foulds, who entered the game in relief in the eighth inning and recorded the final out, worked the ninth inning and held the Cougars from scoring allowing the Roadrunners a chance in their final at-bat in the bottom of the ninth. Following the first out of the inning, Sita was hit by a pitch before being lifted for pinch runner senior
Evan Ochlan. The Cougars recorded a fly out to center field for out number two before Ramapo scratched two runs across home plate. Nierva was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second before being lifted for pinch runner sophomore
Kyle Buser. Kuzmenko drew a walk to load the bases before senior
Matt Chemis beat out an infield hit to third base allowing Ochlan to score with the game-tying run 5-5. Unglaub then stepped to the plate and poked a ball through the right side of the infield as Buser scored with the game-winning run 6-5.
Kevin Stewart started on the mound for the Roadrunners earning a no-decision in the game with two strikeouts, three walks while he surrendered three runs and seven hits over the first 4.1 innings of work.
Greg Westhelle came in for relief in the fifth inning and worked 3.1 innings. He struck out two, did not walk a batter while he surrendered three hits and two runs. Foulds (1-2) earned the win in relief. He struck out one, walked two and gave up only one hit in the final 1.1 innings of work. Chemis and Shannon each finished with three hits in the game while Kuzmenko finished 2-4. Sita collected two RBI while Chemis, Unglaub, Shannon and Nierva all drove home one RBI of their own.
The Roadrunners will return to action on Sunday, April 8th when they travel to the College of New Jersey for a NJAC doubleheader starting at 11:30am.
