Union, NJ: The Ramapo College softball team clinched the #3 seed in the NJAC Softball Tournament with a sweep over Rutgers-Newark University tonight 9-2 in game one and 5-1 in game two. The Roadrunners finish the regular season 23-11 overall, 12-6 in the conference while the Scarlet Raiders wrap up the season at 21-16 overall and 7-11 in the NJAC.
The Roadrunners will take on #4 Kean University in the opening round of the NJAC Tournament tomorrow afternoon at 4pm. The game will be played at Kean University's Cougar Field and Ramapo will serve as the home team. Tickets are $5.00 for adults; $2.00 for students, children and seniors
Game One
Ramapo got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the third inning when
Shannon Cox drove home
Nicole Hernandez and
Jackie Howarth with a single to right-center field 2-0.
The Scarlet Raiders came back to tie the game in the top of the fourth inning. Kelly Yusko led off with a double before a triple from Sarah Stiehler brought Yusko home. A ground out later in the inning allowed Stiehler to score to tie the game 2-2.
In the fourth inning Ramapo scored three runs taking a 5-2 lead.
Sarah Browning reached on an infield error before being lifted for pinch runner
Harper Patsko. Hernandez singled before
Sisi Machinski poked a single into center field allowing Patsko and Hernandez to move up one base. The relay throw back into the infield was misplayed allowing Patsko to score. With two outs Howarth singled bringing home Hernandez before a second error allowed Machinski to score for the 5-2 lead.
In the sixth inning, Howarth laced a double to left-center field to plate one run before
Ally Spellman drove home the second run of the inning with a RBI single of her own. Cox then drove home two runs with a single to right field to extend the lead 9-2.
Ramapo starting pitcher
Katrina Buczkowski (10-2) held the Scarlet Raiders in the seventh for the complete game win. She struck out five and walked none while she scattered four hits.
Game Two
Ramapo scored two runs in the first inning and one run in the third to take a quick 3-0 lead. Cox singled to left field before
Christina Brizek connected on her team leading fifth home run of the season. Brizek's two-run homerun over the left-center field fence put the Roadrunners on the board in the first inning 2-0.
In the second inning, Ramapo added one run when Howarth singled home Hernandez with an infield single 3-0. In the fourth inning the Roadrunners added two runs on three hits.
Krista Verrino laced a single up the middle before
Carli Egan singled to center field with two outs. Howarth then ripped a double to right field plating both runners for a 5-0 lead.
Rutgers-Newark scored their run in the sixth inning when Kelly Yusko connected on a solo home run over the left field fence 5-1.
