Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College baseball team swept NJAC rival Rutgers-Camden University today 2-0 in game one and 4-2 in game two. The Roadrunners improve to 19-11 overall and even their conference record at 5-5 while the Scarlet Raptors drop to 16-9 overall and 6-4 in the conference.
Game one
Ramapo starting pitcher
Cory Heitler (6-1) took a no-hitter into the eighth inning before the Scarlet Raptors recorded their only hit of the game with a leadoff single from Brandon Cornelius. Heitler struck out six and walked five in the complete game shutout.
The Roadrunners scored one run in the second and one run in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead.
Vincenzo Sita put Ramapo on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning, his second of the season, over the right field fence for a 1-0 lead.
Joe Maugeri launched a triple into the left-center field gap to lead off the fourth inning before
Connor Walsh singled him home to extend the lead 2-0.
Rutgers-Camden starting pitcher Steven Bloyed worked a complete game, striking out six and walking none. He scattered four Ramapo hits while surrendering two runs.
Game two
Ramapo completed the sweep with a 4-2 win in game two. Roadrunner starting pitcher
Kevin Stewart struck out six, walked one and scattered four hits in eight innings of work.
Kevin Foulds entered the game in the top of the ninth and earned his sixth save of the season. He struck out two and induced a pop fly to right field to end the game with the bases loaded to end the Scarlet Raptor threat.
Bobby Shannon put the Roadrunners on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a sac fly as
Anthony Kuzmenko scored 1-0. In the second inning, Ramapo added two runs for a 3-0 lead. With the bases loaded, Kuzmenko put down a sac bunt back to the pitcher as
Ryan MacNaughton scored. Kuzmenko reached on a throwing error as the bases were loaded again for Maugeri. Maugeri put down a sac bunt allowing
Matt Chemis to score to extend the lead 3-0.
Rutgers-Camden got on the board in the sixth inning when Tyler Travis drove home Matt Stoots with a sac fly to center field 3-1. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Ramapo added an insurance run. With two outs and runners on first and third, Kuzmenko got into a rundown between first and second while
Austin Unglaub was able to score before the Scarlet Raptor defense could tag out Kuzmenko for the final out of the inning 4-1.
Cornelius added one run for Rutgers-Camden in the top of the ninth with a RBI single to center field as RJ Concepcion touched home plate 4-2.
Kuzmenko, Walsh, Sita, MacNaughton and Chemis all recorded two hits in the game for the Roadrunners.
Ramapo returns to action on Wednesday, April 18th when they host Old Westbury College in a non-conference game at 4pm.
