Jersey City, NJ: The Ramapo College baseball team defeated New Jersey City University on the road 13-2. The Roadrunners improve to 17-11 overall and 3-5 in the NJAC while the Gothic Knights drop to 14-9 overall and 4-4 in the conference.
Austin Unglaub opened the game with a leadoff triple in the top of the first inning before
Anthony Kuzmenko drove him home with a sac fly for a quick 1-0 lead. NJCU tied the game in the bottom half of the inning when Dan Berardi drove home Nick LoGatto with a RBI fielder's choice.
In the top of the second
Bobby Shannon worked a leadoff walk before moving to second on a sac bunt. He then moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sac fly from
Nick Camilleri 2-1.
Connor Walsh would score the eventual game-winning run in the in the top of the fourth. Walsh was hit by a pitch to start the inning before Shannon walked and
Vincenzo Sita singled to load the bases. Camilleri then lifted his second sac fly of the day to left field allowing Walsh to score for the 3-1 lead. Shannon later scored on a throwing error 4-1 before
Matt Chemis drove home Sita with a RBI single 5-1.
Joe Maugeri extended the Roadrunner lead to 7-1 when he launched his first home run of the season, a two-run home run as Kuzmenko scored. Later in the inning Shannon and Walsh both scored on an error in the outfield as Ramapo led 9-1.
Matt Meola blasted a pinch-hit double in the top of the sixth before he later scored an infield error for a 10-1 lead. Unglaub made it 11-1 when he scored on a single up the middle by Kuzmenko.
NJCU scored their second run in the bottom of the seventh when LoGatto drove home Matt Corsi with a single before Ramapo starting pitcher
Jerry D'Andrea induced a strikeout looking to end the inning with an 11-2 lead. The Roadrunners added two runs in the top of the ninth inning when Sita drove home Walsh and Shannon with a double, extending the lead 13-2.
Ramapo relief pitcher
Riley Weis struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth as the Roadrunners earned the NJAC road win. Weis worked the final two innings with four strikeouts as he did not surrender a hit. D'Andrea (4-3) earned the win on the mound. He struck out nine, walked two and scattered five hits in seven innings of work.
Shannon finished the game 3-3 with four runs scored while Chemis and Unglaub each finished 3-5 at the plate.
The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow morning when they host NJAC rival Rutgers-Camden University at Jeff Maund Field. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30am.
