MAUGERI PERFECT AT THE PLATE IN 14-7 WIN OVER CSI

Mahwah, NJ:  The Ramapo College baseball team defeated the College of Staten Island 14-7 today at Jeff Maund Field as the Roadrunners improved to 16-10 overall. The Dolphins drop to 8-9 on the season.
 
Staten Island got on the board first with one run in the top of the second inning before Ramapo took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs, Austin Unglaub beat out an infield single before moving to second on an infield throwing error. Joe Maugeri then laced a double into the right-center field gap allowing Unglaub to score for the Roadrunners first run of the game. Liam Duffy then drove home Maugeri with an RBI single to center field as Ramapo took a 2-1 lead. In the third inning, Ramapo added one run when Bobby Shannon drove home Connor Walsh with a single fora. 3-1 lead. Walsh ripped a triple into deep center field earlier in the inning.
 
CSI plated two runs in the fourth inning to tie the game 3-3 before Ramapo starting pitcher Nick Recarte struck out the final two batters of the inning to end the threat. The Roadrunners regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Maugeri poked a lead off single up the middle before he moved to second on a sac bunt from Liam Duffy. Ryan MacNaughton then singled to put runners on the corners before Maugeri scored on a throwing error by CSI. Anthony Kuzmenko smacked a triple to right field which allowed MacNaughton to touch home plate for the 5-3 lead. Ramapo added two runs in the fifth when Unglaub and Maugeri both put down sacrifice bunts to plate Bobby Shannon and Vincenzo Sita respectively to extend the lead 7-3.
 
Jett Nouvertne recorded an RBI groundout for CSI in the sixth inning to add one run 7-4 before Ramapo tacked on six runs on four hits to push the score to 13-3. The inning was highlighted with a bases loaded RBI ground out from Kuzmenko to plate the fifth run of the inning.
 
CSI added one run each in the seventh and eighth inning before Ramapo added a single run in bottom of the eighth. Maugeri singled, stole second and moved to third on an infield ground out before Kyle Buser connected on an infield single of his own allowing Maugeri to score for a 14-6 lead. In the top of the ninth, CSI scored one run with two outs when Russo beat out an infield single to third base as Amato scored 14-7. Robert Sartori who came into pitch the ninth inning for Ramapo, induced a ground out back to himself as he flipped to Matt Meola at first base for the final out of the inning.
 
Nicke Recarte (2-1) earned the win on the mound with seven strikeouts, eight walks in 5.0 innings pitched. He scattered two hits and surrendered four runs. Tyler Lombardo worked the next three innings, striking out three, walking none and scattering five hits and letting up two runs. Sartori pitched the ninth inning, scattering three hits and surrendering one run.
 
Maugeri was perfect at the plate finishing 4-4 with four runs scored and two RBI while Kuzmenko finished 3-5 with three RBI and one run scored. Walsh, Shannon, Sita and MacNaughton each collected two hits apiece in the game while Duffy drove in two RBI.
 
The Roadrunners return to action on Thursday, April 12th when they host New Jersey City University in a NJAC conference game at 3:30pm.
