RAMAPO DEFEATS HUSSON 77-75 AT D3HOOPS.COM CLASSIC

Las Vegas, NV:  The Ramapo College men's basketball team held off a comeback from Husson University to win 77-75 at the D3hoops.com Classic at South Point Arena. The Roadrunners, who won their third straight game, improve to 10-2 overall while the Eagles drop to 6-5 overall.

The Roadrunners jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first three minutes of the half. Rob McWilliams put Ramapo on the board with a jumper before Rob Lewis sank one of two free throws. McWilliams would make it 5-0 with a layup off an assist from Jason Battle before Husson would score their first basket, a three-pointer from DJ Bussey five minutes into the half. A three-pointer from Kashaun Barnes put the Roadrunners up 6-3 before three straight three-pointers, one from Brett Cunningham and two from Bussey, put Husson up 12-6 with just over 12 minutes left on the clock. Battle and Matt Latka made back-to-back baskets for Ramapo to come within two of the Husson lead 14-12 with less than ten minutes to play. Dylan Angel scored another three-pointer for Husson for a 19-14 lead before Ramapo closed the gap to one as Barnes and Latka hit a layup and jumper respectively with 7:26 on the clock. Justin Thompson went on a mini 5-0 run of his own for Husson scoring a layup and three-pointer for a six-point lead 24-18 before Ramapo went on a 6-0 run to tie the game 24-24. The two teams traded baskets before Barnes needed to make both free throws with 2:54 left on the clock to take a one-point lead 29-28. Following a missed three-pointer from Husson, Barnes sank a three-pointer putting Ramapo up 32-28. Cunningham scored a basket for Husson before Latka started an 8-0 that ended the half as Ramapo went into the locker room up 40-33.
 
The second half proved to be tough down the stretch for the Roadrunners as Husson tried to overcome Ramapo in the final five minutes of action. Bryant Quill put the Roadrunners up 18 with 5:17 on the clock 68-50 before the Eagles would cut the lead to under ten with 3:02 left to play. They used a 12-2 run started by a three-pointer from Bussey and capped off with a layup from Corey Kaiser as they closed in on the Ramapo lead 70-62. Battle brought the lead back to double digits with a pair of free throws 72-62 with 2:37 on the clock before Bussey sank a pair of his own which started a 13-4 run in the final two minutes of action which included three three-pointers. Justin Martin hit back-to-back threes to cut the lead to four with 1:13 on the clock before Quill made the second of a two-shot foul shot with 22 seconds left in the game to extend the Ramapo lead to five 75-70. Justin Thompson would grab an offensive rebound for Husson and send a tip-in through the hoop before Lewis made one free throw for Ramapo as the Roadrunners led 76-72 with 11 seconds remaining. Martin would come down the court for Husson and score the team's 14th three-pointer of the game to come within one of the Roadrunner lead 76-75 with six seconds on the clock. McWilliams was fouled on the inbounds play as he sank one free throw with two seconds left for a 77-75 lead. Husson could not get a shot off as time expired as Ramapo held on for the non-conference victory.
 
Three players scored in double figures in the game for Ramapo as they were led by Barnes with 26 points. He finished 13-14 from the free throw line while he added four rebounds, one assist and one steal. Lewis posted 17 points while he added nine rebounds, two blocks and two steals while Latka finished with ten points, eight rebounds and one block. McWilliams finished with nine rebounds and seven points while Battle contributed with eight points, two assists and three rebounds. Ramapo shot 41% (25-61) from the field, 14% (1-7) from the three-point line and 68% (26-38) from the free throw line. The Ramapo defense forced 19 Eagle turnovers which led to 17 points for the Roadrunners. Ramapo also out rebounded the Eagles 47-34 in the game.
 
Husson was led by Thompson who tallied 21 points, three assists and one steal. Bussey finished 5-11 from beyond the three-point line and 19 points overall while Martin collected 15 points while knocking down three three-pointers in the game. The team shot 41% (26-63) from the floor, 40% (14-35) from the three-point line and 60% (9-15) from the free throw line.
 
The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow night at 11pm (EST) when they take on Linfield College (8-2 overall) at the D3hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas, NV.
