Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College women's basketball team played host to the Scarlet Raptors of Rutgers Camden tonight as they posted a 51-54 loss in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match-up. With the loss the Roadrunners fall to 5-5 overall and 1-5 in the NJAC. Rutgers Camden improves to 6-4 and 3-3 in conference play.
Gabby Greene led the Scarlet Raptors on the night as she collected 15 points hitting 5-7 from the field and 2-2 from the line. Wykira Johnson-Kelly collected ten points as the team hit a combined 20-57 (35%) in the win. Fatimah Williams dished out four assists and Ariel Robinson pulled down a team high 15 rebounds. The Scarlet Raptors forced 23 Ramapo turnovers on the night.
For Ramapo,
Samantha Rinaldi led the team with 19 points and
Stacey Porzl collected 12 as the team hit 20-43 (47%). Rinaldi pulled down nine rebounds and dished out six assists while they forced 11 Rutgers Camden turnovers.
After trailing 2-8 to start the game, Porzl would nail down a three-point goal off a dish from
Amber Sagan to close the gap to 5-8 with 4:13 on the clock.
Jessica Repasy followed with a basket of her own to come within one (7-8), but Robinson hit a jumper to lead, 10-7 with under two to play. The period would end with Rutgers Camden on top, 12-9, Robinson leading the way with four points. Porzl led Ramapo with three. In the second, Rinaldi hit back-to-back jumpers to open the scoring and give the Roadrunners a 13-12 lead but the Raptors fired back with a 7-0 run to go ahead, 19-13 with a jumper from Johnson-Kelly. The Raptors continued to spread the gap working to a double-digit advantage with 2:56 on the clock and a basket again from Johnson-Kelly (28-18). The second period would end with Rutgers Camden on top, 33-23. Greene and Johnson-Kelly each led with eight points as the team hit 13-31 (42%). Ramapo went 10-22 (46%) with Rinaldi leading the way with 11 points.
Greene nailed down a long shot to open the third period and Porzl responded with a three of her own to stand with Rutgers Camden leading, 36-26 with 8:46 to play. The Roadrunners didn't sit back as they connected a 14-0 run with six points from Porzl, six from
Sarah Minchin and two from Repasy to take a 37-36 lead with 3:26 to play in the period. The two teams traded baskets down the stretch as Ramapo led 41-40 at the buzzer. Rutgers Camden quickly took the lead at the start of the final period as they worked to a 47-43 lead with a three-pointer from Shane Holmes. Over the remainder of the game the Scarlet Raptors kept on top and the Roadrunners were unable to push past, despite coming within one (51-52) in the final seconds, as they dropped the NJAC match-up at home, 51-54. Greene added seven points in the final minutes and Rinaldi collected an additional eight.
The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday, December 15
th when they travel to York College for a 5:30pm tip-off.
