Westfield, MA: The Ramapo College men's basketball team pulled out a last second victory for the second time in the last three games as they defeated Westfield State University 61-60 in the Rick Martin - Holiday Inn Express Tournament Championship. The Roadrunners remain undefeated at 4-0 overall while the Owls now stand at 2-1 on the season.
Ramapo would go into the locker room up 28-27 at halftime before they needed some late game heroics from junior
Jordan Zagadou. With 2:18 remaining in the game the Owls saw themselves up five 59-54 before senior
Kashaun Barnes hit back-to-back free throws to come within one 59-58 with 1:30 on the clock. Westfield St. would turn the ball over but Ramapo could not find the basket as they too would turnover the ball now with 35 seconds remaining on the clock. The Owls would send Ant Reynolds to the line with 13 seconds left; he would hit one of two free throws to take a 60-58 lead before Ramapo called a timeout.
With four seconds on the clock the Barnes was fouled as he hit one of two free throws to come within one 60-59. Following a quick timeout from the Roadrunners, Zagadou would deny the inbounds pass from the Owls, which was tipped away. Junior
Rob McWilliams grabbed the ball, drove towards the basket and dished a pass off to Zagadou who hit a jumper with two seconds remaining to give Ramapo a one-point lead. The Owls did not get a shot off in time as the final buzzer sounded as Ramapo came away with a 61-60 non-conference road win.
The Ramapo defense forced 25 Westfield State turnovers in the game, which led to 17 points for the Roadrunners. Ramapo was led by Barnes who recorded 18 points including finishing 8-10 from the free throw line. Senior
Rob Lewis who was named Tournament MVP, posted 16 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. McWilliams contributed with 12 points while he posted eight rebounds, three assists and a team high five steals. Junior
Connor Romano added seven points while Zagadou finished with six points, four rebounds and a team high two blocked shots. Ramapo shot 33% (22-66) from the field, 25% (2-5) from the three-point line and 65% (15-23) from the free throw line in the game.
The Owls were led by Malik Pouncy who came off the bench for a team high 13 points while Jauch Green tallied ten points and seven rebounds. Marcus Collins and Reynolds pulled down a team high eight rebounds each while Justin Rennis added eight points and two blocks. The Owls made six three-pointers in the game as they shot 60% (6-10) from beyond the three-point line. They shot 33% (20-59) from the field and 63% (14-22) from the free throw line.
The Roadrunners return to action on Tuesday, November 20th when they travel to Rutgers-Newark University for a NJAC conference game at 8pm.
