New London, CT: The Ramapo College men's soccer team posted a 2-0 shutout win today over Springfield College in the opening round of the 2018 NCAA Championship Tournament to advance to tomorrow's second round against host Connecticut College. With the win the Roadrunners improve to 16-3-2 overall and tie the record for most wins in a season set back in 1996.
This was the first win in program history in NCAA Tournament play as Guilherme DeNovaes scored what turned out to be the game winner off an assist form Joe Fala. DeNovaes gave Ramapo the lead just under two minutes into the game as he scored his second of the season to put Ramapo ahead, 1-0. The score would hold until the intermission as the two teams played a even half with two shots each. Joshua Schaffer made one save in net in the first 45 minutes of play and Stewart Frank made one of his own for the Pride.
The Roadrunners held off the Pride in the second half despite Springfield out shooting Ramapo, 10-5. But it was Fala who gave Ramapo insurance with his 26th goal of the season at the 80:07 minute mark to put the Roadrunners on top, 2-0. Schaffer came up huge in the second half with five big saves for Ramapo. Frank would add two of his own for the Pride (14-5-1).
Fala's goal keeps him on top of Division III for total goals scored (26) and ties him with the Division II leader. His sits in second amongst Division I athletes.
The Roadrunners take on the Camels of Connecticut tomorrow, November 11th at 1pm.
