Mahwah, NJ: The William Paterson University men's soccer team defeated Ramapo College 4-3 in double overtime today at the Athletic Center Turf Field. The Pioneers improve to 8-2 overall, 2-1 in the NJAC while the Roadrunners now stand at 4-6 overall, 1-2 in the conference.
Ramapo got on the board with back-to-back goals in the first half to take a 2-0 lead.
Ariton Mimini scored the first goal for the Roadrunners in the 9th minute of action (8:39) off a pass from
Joseph Fala. Fala would find the back of the net a few minutes later (10:43) this time with Mimini recording the assist to score his second goal of the season. William Paterson scored their two goals late in the first half when Charlie Lizardo and Kyle Adams tallied back-to-back goals. JP Gonzales was able to get the ball to Lizardo who headed the ball past the diving Ramapo keeper in the 39th minute (38:10) while Adams collected a ball that was rebounded off of Christopher Fuentes' shot and found the back of the net in the 43rd minute (42:06).
The game remained tied heading into halftime 2-2. WPU held a slight advantage in shots 10-7 in the first half while Ramapo recorded the only corner kick of the half.
Edward Franzoni put Ramapo up 3-2 in the second half and once again Fala assisted in the 51st minute (50:01). WPU tied the game 2:35 minutes later with an unassisted goal from Cameron Allen, his seventh of the season for a 3-3 score. Neither team could find the back of the net the remainder of regulation, sending the game into overtime. WPU held a 7-2 advantage in shots during the second half while the Pioneers also tallied the only two corners of the half.
In the first overtime period, each team recorded two shots but none found the back of the net as the Roadrunners saw themselves heading into their third straight double overtime game. The Pioneers scored the game-winning goal in the 104th minute of action (103:51) when Kyle Adams collected a rebound off a save from Fuentes' shot and to deliver the golden-goal and a 4-3 road win for WPU.
Both teams collected two corner kicks in the game while WPU posted 21 shots to Ramapo's 11 including ten on goal for the Pioneers and four on goal for the Roadrunners.
Ryan Sprague posted six saves for Ramapo while Tim Morris collected one save for the Pioneers.
The Roadrunners return to action when they travel to NJAC rival Rutgers-Camden University on Saturday, September 30th at 1pm. The Scarlet Raptors and Roadrunners played to a 1-1 draw in double overtime during the 2016 season.
