WALSH LEADS RAMAPO OVER RUTGERS NEWARK 7-6

Union, NJ:  The #2 Ramapo College baseball team stayed alive in the NJAC Baseball Championship Tournament with a 7-6 win over #4 Rutgers-Newark University (24-15-1) today in game eight of the tournament. The Roadrunners improve to 24-15 overall and move to game ten of the tournament tomorrow afternoon at 1:30pm against #3 Rowan University.

The Roadrunners were led by Connor Walsh who finished the game 4-4 with three RBI. He would give the Roadrunners a 7-3 lead in the sixth with a bases loaded three RBI double.

The Scarlet Raiders scored one run in the top of the third inning before Ramapo scored in the bottom half of the inning to get on the board. Austin Ungluab led off with a triple to the right center field gap before he scored Rob DeAngelis laced a single back up the middle to tie the game 1-1. Ramapo added two runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead. Bobby Shannon reach on an error and advanced to second before Matt Chemis legged out an infield single. Shannon advanced to third on an infield throwing error before he came home on Mario Fontanella's sac fly to center field for a 2-1 lead. Chemis later scored on Unglaub's single for the 3-1 lead.

In the fifth inning Rutgers Newark added two runs to tie the game 3-3 before Ramapo tacked on four runs in the sixth. DeAngelis singled home Vincenzo Sita before Walsh came up with the bases loaded and smacked his seventh double of the season that cleared the bases allowing Joe Maugeri, DeAngelis and Brandon Martinez to score for the 7-2 lead.

Rutgers Newark would make it interesting in the eight and ninth inning as they scored three runs. They added two in the top of the eighth when JC Ball reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Ross Halkias to score. Ball stole second before Ryan Zucker walked loading the bases with one out. Justin Marks drove home Anthony Perconte with an RBI fielder's choice before Ramapo reliever Greg Westhelle induced a ground out to second base to end the threat. The Scarlet Raiders would load the bases in the top of the ninth with no outs before Whestelle recorded a strike out looking. Colin Powers lifted a sac fly to right field plating Dan Tricarico as John Klimowich moved up to third base on the play as the game-tying run. Westhelle then closed the door on the threat with a strikeout to end the game and earn his fourth save of the season.

Jerry D'Andrea earned a no-decision in the game as he started for Ramapo. He went five innings, he struck out four, walked two and scattered six hits. Kevin Foulds (3-0) earned the win in relief as he worked 2.1 innings. Westhelle struck out two, walked one and surrendered three hits in the final 1.2 innings of the game.
