Mahwah, NJ: The #21 Ramapo College softball team swept a pair of games over #10 Rowan University today, 5-1 in game one and 7-5 in game two. The Roadrunners improve to 27-7 overall and win the NJAC regular season championship with a 17-1 conference record. The Profs now stand at 31-7 overall, 12-6 in the conference.
Ramapo's 17-1 conference record is the program's best under head coach
Bridgette Quimpo and is second in program history. The 2003 team swept the conference with an 18-0 record. Ramapo also earns the #1 seed in the NJAC Tournament which begins Tuesday afternoon. The Roadrunners will take on #6 Montclair State University at home at 4pm. Ramapo swept MSU in a pair of one run games on April 27th.
Game 1: Rowan got on the board with one run in the top of the first inning before
Harper Patsko put the Roadrunners in the lead for good with a two-run home run in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead.
Jackie Howarth worked a 12 pitch walk to lead off the inning before Patsko came up big later in the inning. The Roadrunners added one run in the third when
Shannon Cox singled home Howarth with a hard hit single to left field for a 3-1 score. In the fifth inning
Nicole Mahoney would come around to score on
Kristen Ruggiero's bunt single while they added another run in the sixth when
Ally Spellman walked and later scored on a Rowan error to extend the lead 5-1.
Erin Fitzsimmons (11-3) struck out four, walked one and scattered five hits in the complete game win for Ramapo. Cox finished the game 3-4 at the plate with one RBI while Patsko was 2-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Howarth was 2-2 with two runs scored.
Game 2: Ramapo saw themselves down the whole second game to Rowan until the bottom of the seventh. Rowan scored three quick runs in the top of the first inning before Ramapo added single runs in the third and fourth innings to come within one 3-2. In the bottom of the third
Nicole Hernandez scored an unearned run before
Grace Brennan belted a home run down the left field line in the fourth inning to come within one. Rowan would add one run in the fifth for a 4-2 lead before Brennan singled home Mahoney in the sixth as the Roadrunners were still down 4-3.
The Profs added another run in the top of the seventh to take a 5-3 lead before Ramapo came back to win the game in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, Spellman reached on an error, Patsko singled and Mahoney walked to load the bases. Cox then connected on her first career home run, a grand slam over the left field wall to lead the Roadrunners in a walk-off 7-5 victory.
Paige Merle (2-1) earned the win in relief. She struck out three, walked three and surrendered two hits in the final two innings of work. Katrina Buchkowski worked the first five innings for Ramapo, she scattered nine hits. Howarth, Patsko, and Brennan all collected two hits each in the game.
