Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College baseball team defeated non-conference rival Farmingdale State College 16-8 at Jeff Maund Field. The Roadrunners improve to 6-7 overall while the Rams now stand at 6-9 on the year.
Ramapo took a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when
Rob DeAngelis led off with a single down the right field line before he stole second base with no outs. Following an infield groundout putting DeAngelis on third base,
Brandon Martinez hit a ball that hugged the third base foul line allowing DeAngelis to cross home plate. In the top of the second Farmingdale scored two runs taking a 2-1 lead before Ramapo added three runs in the bottom of the second for a 4-2 lead. The Roadrunners scored all three runs with two outs when
Matt Chemis hit a bases loaded double to right field allowing all three runners to score.
In the third inning Brandon Ernest singled home Dalton McCarthy before Nicholas Soriano drove home two more runs with a single through the infield for a 5-4 lead. Ramapo tied the game in the bottom half of the third when Martinez led off with a triple before
Austin Unglaub drove him home with a hard hit single up the middle 5-5. Farmingdale came back with one run in the fourth to take back the lead 6-5 before Ramapo scored four runs in the bottom of the inning.
Bobby Shannon led off with a walked before DeAngelis laced a triple down the right field line allowing Shannon to score the first run of the inning. DeAngelis came home on Chemis' single up the middle for a 7-6 lead before Chemis scored on an infield error 8-6.
Mario Fontanella then drove home
Joe Maugeri with a sac fly to right field for a 9-6 lead. Ramapo added four runs in the fifth inning extending their lead 13-6. The inning was highlighted by Shannon's RBI triple to center field allowing
Derek Romberg to score; Romberg led off with a single earlier in the inning.
Each team scored one run in the seventh for a 14-7 score before the Rams scored their final run of the game in the eighth inning. Tyler Schrimpf recorded a sac fly to right field allowing Vincent Rice to score 14-8. Ramapo added two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning pushing their lead 16-8.
Jon Brignoni (1-0) earned the win in relief with four strikeouts in three innings of work while he gave up only three hits and one run. Ramapo pounded out 16 hits in the game including five extra base hits. Chemis led the team with four RBI with a 2-4 day at the plate including one run scored. Unglaub drove home three runs finishing 2-5 while DeAngelis was 3-4 with four runs scored and one RBI.
Evan Ochlan went 2-2 at the plate with two RBI and one run scored while
Joe Maugeri was 2-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.
The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday when they travel to NJAC rival Rowan University for a double header beginning at 11:30am.
