Osceola, FL: The Ramapo College softball team split their opening double header at the Rebel Spring Games. The Roadrunners (1-1) fell to Gustavus Adolphus 4-0 before they bounced back to shut out Saint Joseph's College – Long Island 2-0.
In game one, Gustavus Adolphus (10-1) scored three quick runs in the first inning when Aly Freeman smacked a three-run homerun over the right field fence to take a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the second they tacked on one more run on two hits for a 4-0 lead. Erin Carlson ripped a double down the left field line that just stayed inside the foul line plating pinch runner Caitlin Kammerer.
The Roadrunners best chance to plate some runs came late in the game when they had two runners on and two outs. Gustavus Adolphus was able to get out of a potential bases loaded jam when they picked off a Roadrunner at second base to end the inning.
Ramapo only collected five hits in the game while Gustavus recorded eight of their own.
Katrina Buczkowski (0-1) struck out five, walked one and surrendered four runs in the loss. Hannah Heacox (5-1) earned the win on the mound with six strikeouts, two walks while she scattered five hits in the complete game.
In game two,
Christina Brizek (1-0) fired a one-hitter over the Golden Eagles (1-6) with seven strikeouts and two walks to earn the shutout win. Ramapo didn't push a run across until the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs and runner's on first and second,
Kristen Ruggiero laced a dingle down the left field line that plated Cox with the team's first run for a 1-0 lead. Cox singled to left field earlier in the inning.
Ramapo added a run in the sixth inning once again with two outs to take a 2-0 lead.
Ally Spellman singled before Ruggiero worked a four-pitch walk.
Kendra Decker made her first collegiate plate appearance and poked a single into left field that allowed Spellman to touch home plate.
Brizek made quick work of St. Joseph's in the seventh inning recording two foul outs and a strike out to end the game.
The Roadrunners return to action at 9am tomorrow morning when they take on the University of Dubuque while they will play McDaniel College at 11:15am at the Rebel Spring Games.
