#6 RAMAPO FALLS IN SEASON OPENER 9-3

Winter Haven, FL:  The Ramapo College (0-1) baseball team dropped their first game at the RussMatt Invitational 9-3 to Suffolk University (MA) this afternoon. The Rams improve to 2-0 overall.
 
Suffolk scored one run in the stop of the second inning before Ramapo came back to the game 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning. Joe Maugeri singled to right-center field and advanced to second on a wild pitch before moving to third on a fly ball out. He later scored on a pass ball to tie the game.
 
The Rams scored one run in the top of the seventh inning before Ramapo once again tied the game in the bottom half of the inning. Mario Fontanella led off with a single through the left side of the infield before being lifted for pinch runner Evan Ochlan. Vincent Sita put down a sacrifice bunt to move Ochlan up one base before Ochlan advanced to third on a hard hit single to right field by Rob DeAngelis. Maugeri then ripped a single to center field plating Ochlan for a 2-2 score.
 
The Rams regained the lead in the top of the eighth with two runs on one hit for a 4-2 advantage. Sita plated the final run for Ramapo in the bottom of the eighth when Sita drove home Austin Unglaub with a sac fly to come within one 3-4. Unglaub reached on a single earlier in the inning. Suffolk then broke the game open in the ninth inning with five runs on four hits and one error to take a 9-3 lead.
 
Worth Walrod (1-0) earned the win on the mound for the Rams with three strikeouts, four walks and surrendering only two hits in six innings of work.
 
Cory Heitler started the game for Ramapo and earned a no-decision with eight strikeouts and one walk in 6.1 innings of work. Greg Westhelle (0-1) took the loss with one strikeout, three walks and two runs scored. Maugeri led the team with two hits, one run scored and one RBI.
 
The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow against Endicott College in a double header starting at 1:30pm.
