Mahwah, NJ: The Ramapo College women's basketball team played host to the Profs of Rowan University tonight at the Bradley Center where despite a fourth quarter push, the Roadrunners would fall short, 57-66. The Profs jump ahead to 11-4 overall on the year and 5-3 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference while Ramapo falls to 6-9 overall and 1-7 in conference play.
Anyssa Sanchez led all scorers with 21 points as she collected a double-double with 13 rebounds. April Szymczyk collected 16 points and Summer Crilley netted 11 as the team combined hitting 25-63 (40%) from the field. Crilley dished out four assists and Sanchez grabbed six steals while Crilley grabbed nine rebounds of her own.
Ramapo finished the first quarter trailing, 10-18 after the Roadrunners started the game with a 5-0 run sparked by a free throw and a jumper from
Jina Crawford. The Profs worked to tie the game at 7-7 with an and-one play from Sanchez and they gained their first lead, 10-7, with a long shot from Alexis Kriley. Kriley would drain another three and Summer Crilley added a three of her own to go ahead 16-7 with 2:31 on the clock. Sanchez netted two before
Jenna Harsh would drain a three for Ramapo at the buzzer. In the second, Rowan would work to their biggest lead of 19 with 3:24 on the clock when Szymczyk put away two baskets from the charity stripe. The half would end with Rowan on top 35-22 with Sanchez leading the team with 11 points. The Profs combined hitting 14-34 (41%) ahead of Ramapo's 8-27 (30%). Crawford led Ramapo with 11 points in the half.
The Profs started the third quarter on a 16-4 run which was capped by two quick baskets off a rebound and a steal on the end line. Rowan would lead 51-26 with 4:56 to play. The Roadrunners responded with a 7-0 run to close the gap, 33-51, but Kriley responded with two points to bring the lead back to 20 at 53-33. The teams would finish the third with Rowan on top, 54-37.
Shelby Ringer started the final quarter with a three-point goal and
Tia Solomon nailed down two points to close the gap, 42-54, before Ringer would hit another long shot at 4:32 to come within nine, 47-56. Despite coming within seven points, 53-60 with two free throws from
Kellie Lane and again, 55-62 with a basket from Lane, it would be the Profs in the lead at the final buzzer, 57-66, taking the conference victory. Szymczyk led the Profs in the second half with ten points as the team went 11-29. Ramapo hit 13-27 from the field behind nine points from Lane.
Ramapo shot 21-54 (39%) in the loss with Crawford and Lane each contributing 13. Solomon finished with ten points and Solomon and
Bintou Berete each pulled down six boards.
Jillian Artrip dished out four assists.
Ramapo returns to action on Saturday, January 14th when they travel to NJCU for a 3pm tip-off.
