WOMEN'S BASKETBALL GETS ROAD WIN OVER NJCU BEHIND BERETE

Jersey City, NJ:  Bintou Berete led the Ramapo College women's basketball team to a New Jersey Athletic Conference victory today over the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University on the road.  Berete collected 14 points as she led the team to the 51-38 win, pushing the Roadrunners ahead to 7-9 overall on the year and 2-7 in conference play.  NJCU falls to 4-12 overall and remains defeated in conference play at 0-9.
 
NJCU would start off the scoring and Ramapo's Kellie Lane would tie the game at 2-2 before Berete would score two straight free throws as Ramapo never looked back and led the rest of the game earning the NJAC road win.  Berete shot 5-12 from the field and a perfect 4-4 from behind the charity stripe as the team hit a combined 19-54 (35%) in the win.  Berete completed a double-double with ten rebounds as Lane chipped in 11 points and Jina Crawford ten.  Lane dished out four assists and grabbed three steals and Tia Solomon collected nine rebounds on the day.
 
In the first quarter Ramapo would gain a nine point advantage just before the buzzer as Bridgette Buckalew nailed down a three off a dish from Shelby Ringer to go up, 14-5.  The Roadrunners quickly jumped ahead by double-digits to start the second as Ringer slammed down a long shot of her own to jump ahead 17-5.   The Gothic Knights responded with a 6-0 run to come within six, 11-17 with a basket from Shege Haxhaj, but Ramapo would hang strong to close out the half with a nine point lead, 27-18.  Crawford and Berete led Ramapo in the half with eight points each as the team went 10-30 (33%) from the field.  Haxhaj led the Gothic Knights with seven points.  The team hit 8-28 (29%) in the half.
 
The third quarter would end with Ramapo ahead, 36-29, and in the fourth, NJCU closed the gap to 31-36 with a basket from Haxhaj with 9:01 on the clock, but Ramapo spent the next seven minutes working to their biggest lead of the game, 15 (51-36) when Berete sank a layup with just over two minutes to play.  Iyannah Moore scored the final basket of the game but it wasn't enough as Ramapo out lasted the Gothic Knights, 51-38.  Lane led Ramapo with nine points in the half and Berete added six as the team went 9-24 (38%).  NJCU was led by Kiana Briggs with seven points.  NJCU shot a combined 9-27 (33%) in the half.
 
Haxhaj finished the day with a double-double including 12 points and ten rebounds, while Briggs contributed 11 points on the day.  NJCU combined for 17-55 (31%) in the loss.  Briggs dished out five assists and Haxhaj grabbed three steals. 
 
Ramapo returns to action on Wednesday, January 18th when they host William Paterson at 5:30pm at the Bradley Center.
