MONTCLAIR SHUTS OUT RAMAPO IN NJAC OPENER

Mahwah, NJ:  The Red Hawks of Montclair State shut out the Ramapo College women's soccer team today, 3-0, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference season opener in Mahwah.  With the victory, Montclair improves to 5-1-1 overall and stands at 1-0 in conference play, while the Roadrunners fall to 1-3-1 overall and 0-1 in the NJAC.

"I'm very proud of how we played today," said Ramapo Head Coach Abby Shiffler.  "I felt we dominated play for several stretches.  We just didn't convert our opportunities and that was the difference."

The Red Hawks got on the scoreboard just over ten minutes into the game when Ashley Koester took the ball up the middle and ripped a shot past the Ramapo netminder to go ahead, 1-0, scoring her fourth goal of the 2016 season.  Under two minutes later, Tyler Madison collected her fourth of the year as she capitalized for Montclair to give the Red Hawks an early 2-0 lead.

The score would remain until the halftime buzzer where Montclair held a 7-3 advantage in shots.  Molly Barrow made just one save in goal in the first 45 minutes of play and Elizabeth Harvell made two saves in net for Ramapo.

In the final 45 minutes of play, Ramapo would match the Red Hawks in shots at five each, but the Red Hawks would collect another goal at 48:21 to earn a 3-0 shut out victory over Ramapo.  The Red Hawk goal came from Sophie Calverley who took a pass from Cassidy Mazzone recording her first goal of the season.

Harvell collected an additional two saves in the second half for Ramapo and Barrow posted three for Montclair as the two teams collected five shots a piece in the final half of play.

In the win, Montclair edged Ramapo 9-2 in corner kicks and 12-8 in shots.

The Roadrunners will travel to New York University on September 21st for a 7pm non-conference match-up on the road.
