Mahwah, NJ: The #4 Ramapo College baseball team faced off with the Red Hawks of Montclair State today in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match-up where Ramapo came out on 8-2 to jump ahead to 19-1-1 overall and 3-0 in the NJAC. With the loss the Red Hawks fall to 11-10 and 2-1 in conference play.
Brandon Martinez led the team as he hit 2-4 including a two-run home run. He scored two runs and drove in three on the day.
Austin Unglaub went 2-5 and
Scott Paulus went 2-4 as they tallied two runs and one run and one RBI respectively.
Connor Walsh would tally three hits on four at bats as he scored one and drove in two, while
Matt Chemis and
Joe Venturino each went 1-4 with one run apiece.
The Roadrunners quickly jumped ahead in the bottom of the 1st after crossing four runs with two outs. Walsh, Unglaub, Martinez, and Paulus strung together singles driving in Venturino, Walsh, Unglaub and Martinez for the four run lead.
Ramapo would tack on another run in the 3rd before Martinez drilled a home run over the center field wall in the 4th. The blast scored Unglaub who ripped a double earlier in the inning to get on base. The two-run bomb gave Ramapo a 7-0 lead after four innings of play.
The Red Hawks got on the scoreboard and broke the shut out in the top of the 6th as Joe Foote singled to center field to drive in Ryan Long who walked to lead off the inning. Matt Long then scored on a ground out from Phillip Scott to put the Red Hawks on the board closing the gap, 2-7.
Walsh drove in Chemis in the bottom of the 8th to take an 8-2 advantage. Chemis singled with one out to reach first base and after the final out of the inning,
Casey Jervis closed out the 9th giving the Roadrunners the 8-2 NJAC win.
John Doherty improves to 4-1 on the year as he pitched 5.1 innings. He struck out four and let up four hits on the day.
Greg Westhelle and Jervis finished out the game for Ramapo. Westhelle pitched 1.2 innings and struck out one and Jervis closed out the game with two innings pitched.
Connor Lindsay gets the loss for Montclair falling to 1-1 on the year. He pitched the first two innings letting up six hits and four runs. He struck out three and walked one. Michael Matarazzo and Anthony DeBlasio finished the game combining for two strike outs.
Foote hit 2-4 on the day and drove in one run while M. Long went 1-4 with one run scored. R. Long scored the final run for the Red Hawks.
The Roadrunners return to action on Sunday, April 10th when they travel to Stockton University for a double-header NJAC match-up starting at 11:30 AM.
