Mahwah, NJ: The William Paterson baseball team scattered 11 hits and scored eight runs as they took down #3/7 Ramapo College, 8-2 today in a New Jersey Athletic Conference match-up at Jeff Maund Field. With the win the Pioneers improve to 18-17 overall and 10-5 in the NJAC. Ramapo falls to 27-8-1 overall and 9-6 in conference play.
KC Abel went 2-5 and scored two runs while driving in three to lead the Pioneers in the win. Jimmy Kenny hit 3-5 with one run scored and three RBI while Mike Abate collected two hits on five at bats with two runs scored. Victor Sanchez crossed home plate twice hitting 1-3 and Garret Wiedemann added the final run in the win.
Mitch D'Amato pitched the complete game. He struck out five and walked just two as he let up eight hits to improve to 6-2 on the year.
The Roadrunners got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 3rd inning when
Scott Paulus reached on an error and was later brought home by
Matt Chemis who dropped a single in center field with two outs. The Pioneers answered the run in the top of the 4th with one out when Abate led off the inning with a double, advanced to third on a sac bunt from Sanchez and crossed home plate on a ground out from Abel.
Wiedemann and Sanchez each scored a run in the 5th inning with two outs to take a 3-1 lead before Abel crossed the plate on a Ramapo error to jump ahead 4-1 after four and a half innings.
The Roadrunners tacked on a run in the bottom of the inning when
Joe Venturino drove in
Bobby Shannon who laid down a bunt to the pitcher to get on base. The run closed the gap to 2-4 after five full innings of play.
It was the top of the 6th that exploded for the Pioneers as they crossed four runs to go ahead 8-2, a score which held until the final out. With one out, Abate singled, Sanchez drew a walk, and Abel ripped a single driving in Abate, before Kenny hit a long double to the center field fence bringing home Sanchez and Abel for a 7-2 lead. Kenny came home on a single from Mike Knauf before
Nick Recarte came in on the mound for Ramapo and got the final out, leaving the Roadrunners trailing by six runs.
The Pioneers proved to be too much for Ramapo as they held the Roadrunners to just two hits in the remaining innings taking home the NJAC win, 8-2.
Kyle Haag took the loss for Ramapo. He pitched 4.2 innings letting up six hits and four runs. He struck out five and fell to 2-1 on the year. Shannon hit 2-3 with one run and Paulus scored a run of his own in the loss.
Ramapo returns to action tomorrow when they travel to William Paterson for a 3:30pm match-up in Wayne.
