Connor Walsh scored the winning run and
Scott Paulus drove him in as the #1/2 Ramapo baseball team persevered from a deficit to defeat the Scarlet Raiders of Rutgers Newark today at Jeff Maund Field, 5-3. With the New Jersey Athletic Conference victory, the Roadrunners improve to 21-1-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Rutgers Newark falls to 11-7 overall and 3-4 in the conference.
The Roadrunners fell behind 3-0 after just one and a half innings, but they fought back and proved their strength as they tied the game with three runs in the 5th, and scoring what turned out to be the game winner in the bottom of the 6th and one more in the 7th for their third NJAC win of the season.
Rutgers Newark got on the scoreboard first in the 2nd inning when Cameron Dias led off with a single and later scored when Brian Boulineau was hit by a pitch with bases loaded. Anthony Perconte crossed home plate on a fielder's choice from Ryan Zucker before Justin Marks tacked on a third run when Billy Taylor singled to centerfield with two outs.
The Scarlet Raider's lead held until the bottom of the 5th inning when the Roadrunners tied the ball game with three runs of their own. With one out, Paulus ripped a double to center field and later came home on a double from
Bobby Shannon, before
Ryan Rinsky came home on a sac fly from
Rob DeAngelis and Shannon scored on a single from
Matt Chemis.
With the ball game tied, it would be Walsh who scored with two outs as Paulus singled to center field tacking on what turned out to be the game winner and Shannon added insurance when he crossed home plate off a single from Chemis in the 7th to take a 5-3 edge.
It would be
Casey Jervis and
Jerry D'Andrea who would close out the final innings for Ramapo holding the two run lead to earn the conference win. Jervis gets the win as he pitched 5.1 innings. He struck out five and walked two, letting up just one hit and no runs.
Jerry D'Andrea gets his fifth save of the year pitching two innings. He struck out three and walked none. He let up just one hit and no runs.
Shannon hit 2-4 with two runs and one RBI while Paulus went 2-3 with one run and one RBI in the win. Chemis collected two hits on four at bats as he drove in two runs. Walsh went 1-2 with one run and Rinsky scored a run of his own.
For Rutgers Newark, Dias hit 1-3 with one run. Marks collected one hit on four at bats with one run scored and Anthony Perconte scored a run in the loss. Anthony Rosoline gets his first loss of the year falling to 6-1. He pitched six innings letting up six hits and four runs, while he struck out three.
Ramapo returns to action tomorrow when they travel to Rutgers Newark for a 3:30pm match-up on the road.
