Newark, NJ: The #1/2 Ramapo College baseball team defeated Rutgers-Newark University today 6-3 to sweep the home-and-home series. The Roadrunners improve to 22-1-1 overall, 6-0 in the NJAC while the Scarlet Raiders fall to 11-18 overall, 3-5 in the conference.
The Roadrunners got on the board in the top of the first with two runs.
Joe Venturino laced a double to left-center field plating the first run of the game 1-0, allowing
Rob DeAngelis to score.
Connor Walsh then hit a double to center field allowing
Matt Chemis to score for the 2-0 lead.
The Scarlet Raiders scored two runs in the bottom half of the first inning to tie the game 2-2. Ramapo came back with two runs of their own in the top of the fifth inning. Chemis walked before Venturino ripped a double down the left field line to put runners on second and third with no outs. Walsh poked a single through the left side of the infield allowing Chemis to score before
Austin Unglaub ripped a single to right field plating Venturino to take a 4-2 lead.
The Roadrunners added an insurance run in the top of the sixth when
Bobby Shannon was able to score on an infield error for a 5-2 lead. In the seventh inning Unglaub led off with a single before scoring on an infield ground out to take a 6-2 lead.
Rutgers-Newark added one run in the ninth off Ramapo reliever
Jerry D'Andrea to come within three 3-6. D'Andrea induced an infield ground out to end the Scarlet Raider threat.
Venturino led the team with three hits on four at-bats while Walsh drove home two RBI. Unglaub finished 2-3 with one run score and one RBI.
Kyle Haag (2-0) earned the win with five strikeouts, two walks and two runs scored while he scattered eight hits over the first six innings of work.
Greg Westhelle worked the the seventh and eighth innings, striking out two and surrendering two hits while
Jerry D'Andrea worked the ninth inning with two hits and one earned run.
The Roadrunners return to action tomorrow afternoon when they host NJAC rival Rutgers-Camden University at 11:30am.
