Mahwah, NJ: The Misericordia University baseball team handed #3/4 Ramapo College their first loss of the 2016 season today 8-5 at Jeff Maund Field. The Roadrunners now stand at 13-1-1 overall while the Cougars improve to 13-5.
The Cougars use a four run sixth inning to take a 6-2 lead en route to an 8-5 win. The Roadrunners got on the board first in the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when
Joe Venturino led off with a single and stole second before
Connor Walsh walked. The pair moved up a base on a sac bunt from
Austin Unglaub and
Scott Paulus drove home Venturino with a sac fly.
Mike DiGirolamo then laced a RBI single down the right field line plating Walsh to take a 2-0 lead.
The Cougars came back with two runs of their own in the top of the fifth as Parker Abate singled home Miles Westrich to put Misericordia on the board. Kenny Lindsay then poked a single into left field allowing the second run to cross home plate for a 2-2 score. In the sixth inning, the Cougars took a 6-2 lead with four runs on three hits and aided by one Ramapo error.
Ramapo came back with three runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning to come within one 5-6. Walsh singled and Unglaub walked before Paulus roped a double to the right-center field gap plating both runs. DiGriolamo then singled up the middle allowing Paulus to score from second base. Misericordia extended their lead 8-5 in the top of the eighth inning with two runs when DJ Navoczynski smacked a two-out two RBI double. The Cougars held the Roadrunners in their final two at-bats of the game to earn the road win.
Ramapo starting pitcher
John Doherty (2-1) struck out three, walked one and surrendered eight hits in the game. DiGirolamo finished 3-4 with two RBI while Paulus finished the game 1-3 with one run scored and three RBI.
Garrett Pelko earned the win for the Cougars with a five-inning performance. He struck out one, walked three and surrendered five runs. The Cougars pounded out 13 hits in the game while Abate and Novoczynski each collecting three hits each.
The Roadrunners were recently ranked #3 in the D3baseball.com and #4 in the ABCA Top 25 Polls heading into this week of play. Ramapo returns to action tomorrow when they travel to Farmingdale State University on the road for a 3:30pm start.
