Mahwah, NJ: The Manhattanville College field hockey team prevailed in a double overtime, penalty shootout 4-3 over Ramapo College today at the Athletic Center. The Valiants improved to 11-5 overall while the Roadrunners now stand at 2-11 overall.
The Valiants scored the first three goals of the game in the first half to take a 3-0 lead. Bregje Smits took a pass from Melissa Stys off a penalty corner for her 15th goal of the season to take a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute (16:38). Lisa Maxwell scored unassisted in the 23rd minute before she assisted on Amanda Cirocco's goal in the 28th minute for the 3-0 lead. Both teams tallied four shots in the first half while Ramapo recorded eight corners to Manhattanville's two.
It was all Ramapo in the second half as the Roadrunner came back to tie the game in the 68th minute.
Nicole Healy scored her fourth goal of the season when Ramapo was awarded a penalty stroke in the 55th minute (54:10).
Stephanie Gallo put the Roadrunners second goal on the board off a pass from
Gianna Mouskourie, her third goal of the year in the 65th minute (64:03). Mouskourie netted her fourth goal of the season to tie the game late in the second half with 67:09 on the clock off a pass from Healy to even the score 3-3. Neither team was able to put one into the net in regulation, sending the game into overtime. Ramapo held a 9-3 advantage in shots in the second half.
In the two 15 minute overtime periods both goalies and defense kept each other off the board sending the game into a penalty stroke-off. The Valiants had nine shots in the two OT periods while Ramapo tallied four. In a best-of five series, where each player has eight seconds to score, Manhattanville came out on top with goals from Robin Boot, Melissa Stys and the game-winner from Amanda Cirocco. Ronni Wellema and Healy hit the back of the net on their penalty-stroke.
Emily Kramer recorded seven huge saves for the Roadrunners in the game while Kaitlin Halloran posted four for Manhattanville.
The Roadrunners return to action in their final home game of the 2016 season on Saturday against NJAC rival Montclair State University. Ramapo will honor their senior class prior to the game.
